Perkins School for the Blind in line for historic preservation
grant based on electronic voting.

I hope all of you will use the link below (and forward it to
others to help out) and vote every day to help Perkins School for
the Blind win $100,000 for renovation of the Perkins Pond.
Perkins has been selected as a finalist by the National Trust for
Historic Preservation to participate in the Partners in
Preservation online competition for up to $100,000 from American
Express.
From April 14 - May 17, the public is invited to vote here for
the places they would like to see receive preservation funding.
Each person can vote once daily for any of the 25 historic
places. The winner of the public vote is guaranteed to receive a
grant!

For years, the pond was a place for students to experience
nature. There was boating in the summer and ice skating in the
winter. It remained a useful feature on campus until it was
closed.
This project will restore Perkins Pond to the safe, accessible
and beautiful resource it once was. This is a restricted
opportunity. The prize money can be used exclusively for the
Perkins Pond.

Accessibility Tips:
There are a few challenges in using the National Preservation
website with assistive technology, but it is do-able. The site is
accessible, but there are a few usability issues that could be
better. But, again, for $100,000 I think we can live with it.
Here are some pointers for Jaws users that I hope will be
helpful:
First use the link below to get to the main page. Initially, you
will need to Register. They will want your email address, a user
name and your password, then you answer two additional yes/no
questions about whether you want weekly updates or other notices.
It's OK to say No if you want, it won't jeopardize the grant.
Then you come to the image/home/submit button and you press enter
on that button.
Most of the links are not labeled very well and they all say
image/home/ something, so just be patient and listen through the
whole label to hear what that link will do.
Once you have registered, close Internet Explorer, and then use
the link below to go back to the website. Use your information
you just registered with the site to Login this time. Skip past
the navigation links at the top, and in fact, what I am finding
is the easiest is to go to the bottom of the page with control
page down, then shift tab back up about 5 or 6 links to the
image/home/castyourvote link. Press enter on that link and you
will then be on the voting page.
To vote, you press enter on the first combo box and the list of
the 25 partners appears, arrow down until you get to Perkins;
then tab to the next combo box press enter and a list of a dozen
or so reasons you are voting appears and you can arrow down
again. I pick different reasons each day; then tab to the submit
button and press enter. I think it then says Thank You for Voting
.. or something like that.
Hope this helps and that you will go online and do this every
day. We are currently in third place, so vote now and vote often.
