First, welcome to the list!
It is very hard to say how long a bn should last, like asking how long a
Dell laptop will last. The main factor in this is your flash disk. These
disks are usually good for ten thousand re-writes of information, so it is
not unusual to have them fail after several years (I am actually surprised
you got one to last as long as it has). The problems you described sound
like a bad flash disk to me.
I will say, though, that there may be a new type of Braillenote on the way,
though we do not have any timeframe for its release yet. If you can hold on
until it is released, I think you will be very pleased. If not, the mPower
is still a good machine, and the smaller (though, I have heard, less stable)
PK is also an option. One thing I would try is getting a compactflash card
and storing all your stuff on there instead of the flash disk. You could
also start getting emails on a regular PC and just use the bn to check and
reply to mail, but leave a copy of mail on the server so that the pc can
receive everything as well and the bn is no longer your only source of
emails. I did this starting about a month ago and it worked out very well.
If you have any questions, let us know!
Have a great day,
Alex

Subject: [Braillenote] BrailleNote life expectancy
Hi everyone --
I'm Lucy Sirianni, a new member of this group. I am wondering how long
BrailleNotes typically last before one should consider purchasing a new
one. I've had mine for eight years, and its functionality is becoming
increasingly limited. I had to send it in for repairs twice over the
summer but am continuing to have countless problems, most notably with
sending and receiving emails and having saved files inexplicably
disappear. I'm going to request that my State Commission consider buying
me a new one, and it would help if I could let my counselor know how often
BrailleNotes generally need to be replaced.
Thanks in advance for your help and I look forward to being a part of this
group!
Lucy
