The strange thing is... The files are exactly the same including the file extention, but one says .doc while the other says .DOC as though it's all in caps.

Most likely the file types are not the same. One may be a doc file while the other may be a txt or rtf file. There are many file types for documents and each one may have the same name, but with an extension that identifies the file type; that's the 3 letters that follow the file name just after the period.
