Hi,

I went the transplant route during the first year it was available. Eventually, however, I began to have tghe same kind of trouble with the Tieman display in the MPower. It finally got so bad that I replaced the Tieman with the KGS. That was a year ago last spring. I have had absolutely no trouble since having the KGS display installed. Then I bought a second Braille NOte secondhand last May. It also had the KGS replacement installed when it was in for other problems before I bought it. The braille display in that unit haas also been fine. I know it's expensive, but I think that the only way to get rid of the problem is to either get that display replaced or jump to the Apex.

My first question is: what kind of display (Tieman, the old cells with rubber cursor buttons, or KGS, the new kind with plastic cursor keys) did this happen to? I have had both, though I have had only one Tieman and 2 KGS, and I have never seen this problem.

Have a great day,
Alex

I work with people who have BrailleNotes as a private trainer here in
MN. I've now seen the fourth BrailleNote unit that has had its display
die and the unit report " the braille display is not operating".
Another person who's upset about their unit going out for repairs for
a couple weeks.

I'm just curious to send this out to a list of BrailleNote users: How
many of you have had this problem, what model of unit do you have,
etc.

The BrailleNote is a wonderful little notetaker, but little problems
like this that aren't user-servicable tend to make people apprehensive
to really depend on it. Some of my clients depend almost fully on
their BNs, and having to send them away for anymore than a day or two
is a setback in their schooling/careers/etc.

Someone told me once that they believe that it's a fuse problem -
somehow, a fuse in the display blows and that's what kills it. One of
the four people who had their display go out was using the Exercise
command to check for cell problems when the failure occurred; another
was experiencing "jumpy" cells and certain pins being laggy to
unresponsive prior to the display finally totally giving out. And one
of these people has had it happen twice on a transplanted unit.

So I just thought I'd start an open discussion on this issue and see
what others have been experiencing with it. So far, my own BN hasn't
died in this particular way (knock on wood!), except that mine did
completely die one time to the point where no reset of any sort would
fix it...

Hi List,

Well, I wanted to let everyone know that I called tech support

this morning, so the issue of restoring the braille display has been
resolved. They told me the braille note needed to come in for repairs.

They did, however, give me one strategy to try before making that

determination. It was quite similar to what some of you ave already
suggested. Some of you have given me a specific file in the dictionaries
folder to erase and then do an immediate standard reset. Tech support's
variation on this was to erase the entire dictionaries folder and then
immediately do a standard reset. Doing it their way, when the braille note
came back up, I had to reset some of my braille display options, such a
preferred grade of braille. Unfortunately, this strategy didn't work for me. I don't know that doing it their way is any different from deleting the file
you guys mentioned and reseting, but since that's what they told me, I
thought I'd pass it on. Maybe it can help somebody on the list one day if
they have a braille display problem.

But all in all, it looks like my braille note is headed to the

repair shop for awhile. Though I'll miss having it, I should still be able
to access you guys by email thru a computer. You've offered some great
suggestions, and I can't thank you enough for trying to help me. I hope I'll
be able to do the same for some of you in the future. Thanks again.

Lauren

hi lauren,

From the main menu press f press e to erase go to the flash disk

and go to the dicsionary folder.
The file you are going to erase is keysoft-ksaid.
Then press the reset button with no keys holding down.
I hope I gave you some help.
Good luck,

From Michelle.
