Hi folks,

After a long absence, I am back (had to attend a reteat/conference). After
returning from the event, I have 400 plus messages on my Inbox, with about
one-eighth from the BrailleNote list.

Well, for those who have the Apex - congradulations! Please tell us more
about the Apex so that we would know what to expect from it - thanks. For
those of us who are getting ready or waiting for our Apex units (including
myself), we'll see what happens based on what we get from the Apex users.

Well, here are few comments to recent issues:

. The problem of thumb drives: My theory is that the USB device is
trying to get more power from the Apex, but the unit didn't allow this.
Normally, when a USB device is connected to a computer, when it needs more
power to operate, it asks the computer for more power. The fact that when
the user gets "please wait" message after removing the flash drive suggests
that it is not the problem of the drive nor Apex itself - rather, it is the
problem with USB driver. On the mPower, the flash drive is recognized as
"hard disk" upon connecting to the unit. Now, with the need to conserve
power, I believe that the new architecture (or a way) is in place to prevent
a USB device from using unnecessary power. A solution would be resetting the
unit after connecting the drive in question.

. DOTS 4-5-6 Reset: Yes, you can perform DOTS 4-5-6/JKL reset; as
with Service Reset, I would like to add a caution to this: please don't do
this at wrong times (based on the user guide).

. Backup and restore: It is known (source: Readme for KeySoft 9.0)
that when a user copies something from an SD card, the contents of the card
would be copied again. Since restoring user data involves copying of data
from a source to destination, this bug would be activated. My "hypothetical"
suggestion would be using ActiveSync/Windows Mobile Device Center (in
conjunction with KeySync if you have appointments or contacts) to backup and
mPower and restore the user data to the Apex. Also, if you want to copy
specific folder(s), use mark command (SPACE with M/CTRL+SPACE) at the folder
list.

. Data format: As Robert and others have pointed out, mPower and
Apex runs two different operating system versions of Windows CE. Thus, a
word of caution: just because something works on one platform does not mean
that it will work on another platform. Think of upgrading to Apex as getting
a brand new computer with the hard disk in "factory default" condition - for
us, the Flash Disk. In other words, there might be times when you need to
reenter things again. In my opinion, it is better to write things again
rather than relying on a copy that can be "destroyed." I do understand the
need for convenience and efficiency. However, because of the importance of
data to BrailleNote users, I would like to recommend that some degree of
rewriting of one's information - especially contacts and databases - would
be necessary (for some folks).

Just my opinions - as always. Again, thanks for giving us an update on the
functionality of the Apex.

Merry Christmas,

Joseph S. Lee
