Yes, you'd need a GPS receiver. Sendero sells it for around $129.
The newer ones are much smaller than what you're used to, and communicate
via bluetooth, so there are no wires connecting it to the Apex.
You can attach it to the unit's shoulder strap, and it weighs so little
that you'll hardly notice.
It's small enough to store in the zippered compartment, although, of
course, it wouldn't be practical to use it from there.
