Hi BrailleNote users, HumanWare staff and others,
It's official - BrailleNote PbWorks 7.0 is coming! Yes, the rebirth of
BrailleNote PBWorks - the Project Renaissance is now in Alpha development
phase. The basic framework is now complete, and all I need to do is add
content.
What's new in BrailleNote PBWorks 7.0? The focus of this release is to
upgrade the overall website navigation experience, transition the article
base to Apex and include more useful content with BN users' help. The
feature sets are as follows:
* Table of contents and ankors: Now you can navigate long articles with ease
using ankors, or same page links to jump quickly to desired sections. For
example, choose a desired category from Support Hotline view or move quickly
to a set of commands for a program that you need to use the most.
* Next generation with Apex articles: Starting with BrailleNote PBWorks 7.0,
the basis for most articles will transition to that of Apex. As it has been,
other models, such as mPower and Classic, will still be honored.
* Relevant content for your BrailleNote model: A new Support Hotline view,
titled "Device View" is in development. This means that you can view content
that is relevant for your particular BrailleNote model in addition to
universal content for all devices.
* Support Hotline has been simplified: The Support Hotline's main entrance
has been modified. When you enter Support Hotline page, you'll be presented
with an explanation about Knowledge Base articles and a menu for viewing
Support Hotline articles in category, reverse chronological order or by your
model (for Category, Date and Device views pages, respectively). In future
builds, shortcuts to these views will be provided on the front page of the
PBWorks website.
* Command Summary Table: A comprehensive command summary table is in
development. By taking advantage of same page links, you can move quickly to
a set of commands for programs you need to use the most. For convenience,
the data table features command sets for Braille, QT and external keyboards
and has notes for noteworthy commands.
* Faster and larger: With a PBWorks upgrade, the site now has around 40 GB
of storage. This means more content for users, useful audio tutorials and
websites can be loaded on the website. Also, the upgrade to the site
framework provides decreased load time, particularly for BrailleNote and
mobile devices via Mobile Edition.
Issues and things to note as of 7.0 Alpha 1:
* I have succeeded in placing ankors on some of the articles as a test
measure. If it turns out that it is working, then I'll implement ankors on
long articles and particularly on Device View. As of now, the ankors are
placed on the following pages: Support Information Mode, Upgrading KeySoft
and Support Hotline Category View page.
* The Command Summary data table covers basic commands (navigating lists) to
moving through text in word processor; as time goes by, I'll add the rest of
the command summary tables and ankors for each section.
* Since this is a public Alpha build, there might be mistakes and errors
such as misspellings and incorrect specs. I'll try my best to fix these
errors before release time.
* Some of the articles has indded been modified to take advantage of
transitioning to Apex, such as Exploring Resets, Upgrading keySoft and so
forth. Other ones require extensive edits to move the article base to the
Apex - particularly Support Information Mode article, as it is mostly useful
for mPower users because of different battery technologies involved between
mPower and Apex.
As always, if you can help me organize the site (particularly with Device
View and transitioning the article base), you are welcomed to do so. The
site is, as it has always been, braillenote.pbworks.com. If you have any
comments, please let me know.
P.S. I haven't forgotten about the Seventh Chat... I thought the first
session could be held on Saturday (26th) at 10 A.M. Pacific (1 PM Eastern
and other times) - if that's convenient with you all.
Cheers,
Joseph S. Lee (UCR)
