Hi folks,
Here is the summary for the second BrailleNote Chat. Some of the items
discussed on that chat is almost the same as the first chat. They are:
* The teaser thread: Alex went over a summary of what the list has talked
about over the past few days. In the end, we came to the speculative
conclusion that it might be a VoiceNote version of the Apex.
* USB hard drives: A user's BrailleNote didn't recognize a 320 GB external
hard drive. We determined that it was a power management problem - where the
BrailleNote will not supply enough power to power the drive. It was
suggested to get a "Y adapter" - a UsB cable with two USB host plugs to
allow a device to receive more power.
* Slowness when saving to a USB device: A user reported that there seems to
be slowness when saving a file to the USB drive. It was determined that it
could be the speed of the USB drive; later it was noted that this slowness
occurs only when the file is saved on the first time; subsequent saves does
not produce this issue.
* Password protection and storage card encryption: A participant suggested
if there would be a way to protect a file, folder or groups of them via
passwords. The conclusion was that it could be done. Also, an interesting
feature on locking a storage card to be used only by a BrailleNote was
discussed. On the Apex, the operating system does allow a storage card to be
encrypted so that a particular unit alone can read it. In the end, the users
agreed that and suggested on implementing this feature.
* GSM/3G access cards: A modem that allows a BrailleNote to browse the
Internet using a 3G cell phone network was suggested. However, users noted
that the issue of device drivers for this modem and wireless carrier
variability could hamper this suggestion.
* Costs and notes on BrailleNote trade-in: It was generally agreed by
participants that the cost of BrailleNote is too high and poses cost issues
for those who are tight in budget. Also, users noted that, based on specs
and the newer Windows CE 6.0 operating system, Apex will perform better than
an mPower in terms of memory and others.
* Multitasking and external programs: Users suggested the SDK: citing
creating usefus programs for BrailleNote users. Also, the multitasking of
KeySoft was discussed. Previously under KeySoft 8.0 or lower, the KeySoft
functionality is stored on a huge program called keysoft.exe, which limits
multitasking abilities (having to close the current task when switching to
another one); on the Apex, with the newer operating system in mind and
running up to 32768 programs in mind, participants noted that KeySoft would
have been divided into smaller files, which each program file for each of
the KeySoft functions while presenting same look and feel as KeySoft 8.0.
* Scroll wheel suggestions: Ability to customize the buttons and scrolling
actions on the scroll wheel for different programs e.g. increasing the
system volume when the ENTER key is pressed while the scroll wheel is
turning right and so on.
And other topics (which were many of them). The other ones are same as the
first sessios - Word support, PDF, possibility of implementing Skype on a
BrailleNote and so forth.
Hope this helps... If you have any comments, please let us (the chat
participants) know.
Cheers,
Joseph
