Hello,

KeyChat (the instant messaging client on the bn) supports services that use the XMPP protocol. The advantage of XMPP is that it is open, meaning it will support multiple services that use this protocol (GoogleTalk, Jabber and IChat are the only ones I know of that support XMPP). Unfortunately, MSN (or Windows Live Messenger) uses a different, closed protocol. XMPP is an emerging protocol and HW's theory was that more services such as MSN would switch over to XMPP. But in reality, at least with MSN, I don't think this is going to happen for a while. There were some rumours that AIM was in talks with Google over possibly switching to XMPP at the end of this year or in 2011, but these rumours surfaced about a year ago and I have not heard any more about this since. Recently, FaceBook became available via XMPP; in theory, this shd've allowed KeyChat to access the FaceBook Chat system. But in practice, as far as I know, no-one has been able to get it to work with KeyChat, which seems a little strange as I thought the whole idea of going with XMPP was that services that used it would be instantly supported... but it appears not. Hopefully HW will have a re-think about KeyChat and XMPP (KeyChat does need some improvements).

Hope that made sense,

Robert (message sent from BrailleNote Apex)

Perhaps, someone could answer a question for me. Why isn't MSN chat support? Does it use a different protocol than other forms of chat?
