You can only use your BrailleNote as a client, i.e., you can't do the management from the computer. However, yes, using a crossover cable you can connect your PC to the BrailleNote using Ethernet (assuming you really don't want to connect your BrailleNote and PC to an existing Internet-connected network, if you have one). Windows will use the 169.254.x.x subnet, just set the BrailleNote to match. This gets a bit complicated, but it's possible.
