Dear Barbara and List:

Barbara said it appears the headphone contacts seem to get dirty
easily.

I'm not sure if the headphone contacts get dirty easily or not,
as the unit typically works through the headphones, not its
built-in speaker.

There is a little sensor in the headphone jack that senses the
presence of the headphones and selects the headphone volume
setting when they are plugged in, or the speaker volume when they
are absent. This sensor may be a little prong that is moved
slightly when you plug in headphones. It appears this sensor
fails to sense the absence of the headphones at times. I haven't
taken my Stream apart, but the prong in the headphone jack is how
a radio typically transfers sound from the speaker to headphones.
However radios do not usually have separate volume settings for
speaker and headphones like the Stream does.
