Hello Joseph and all:

I just spent 2 weeks at Guide Dogs For The Blind and to make a long story
short found that my Apex could not connect to their Wi-Fi. This is because
they just upgraded to WPA-2 and Apex does not yet support it. I called tech
support and they informed me that the pending upgrade will support WPA-2.,
but too late for me to use the last two weeks.

Subject: [Braillenote] Some FAQ's on wireless features...

Hi folks,

With the discovery of using bluetooth headphones with Apex, I
thought I'd post some answers on FAQ's for wireless features
(well, based on testing and user experiences):

1. What wireless protocols does BrailleNote support?
This is for Wi-Fi. BrailleNote supports802.11a, 802.11B and
802.11g. However, support for these protocols differs between
models and availible wireless cards. Classic and PK supports A
and B while mPower and Apex supports all three. In case of
models other than Apex, one needs a wireless ethernet card, and
for mPower, a special CF card or a USB adapter is required to
connect to G networks.

2. What wireless security model does BrailleNote support?
All models support WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy); mPower and
Apex supports WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) Personal (also known
as PSK or pre-shared key mode).

3. What Bluetooth profiles does BrailleNote support?
Not applicable to Classic. KeySoft calls them "services." All
models - PK, mPower and Apex - support Serial Port Profile (on PK
and mPower, it is listed as ActiveSync), Human Interface Device
(HID) to interact with keyboards and DUN (Dial--up Network) for
tethering a cell phone (or similar device) to connect to the
Internet. In addition, mPower and Apex supports printer profile
and Apex supports headset profile.

4. Does BrailleNote have a default passcode?
Sometimes known as authentication code or passkey - password or
characters used to confirm connection between two Bluetooth
devices. Only Apex has a default password of its own - 0000.

5. Is it possible to send and receive files between
BrailleNotes?
At this time, only Apex has provision (and foundational things)
to support this feature via File Manager/Translation Menu.

6. What are the steps required to use BrailleNote as a wireless
braille display?
Depending on model: for mPower and PK, one must initiate the
connection from the unit itself; when prompted for services,
select ActiveSync. On the Apex, one can use bluetooth software
on the PC (or equivalent facility on mobile devices) to connect
to the Apex; when prompted, choose Serial Port service, then
enter 0000 when prompted for authentication code on the PC.

7. Why are some Bluetooth services not availible on the mPower
or PK?
According to searches, the biggest factors turns out to be the
operating system in use and drivers. mPower cannot use bluetooth
headsets because support for it came with Windows CE 5.0; PK
cannot utilize printers because there's no support for printers
under PK's version of KeySoft. Apex cannot handle headphones
with advanced audio output because the driver has not been
implemented - although the foundation is there. All models
cannot utilize object exchange smoothly mostly because there's no
known interface or hack to use it in a friendly way.

I think that covers most of these questions... Hope you find
these useful. Again, if you have any comments, feel free to let
us know...

Cheers,
Joseph
