Hi Joseph
Very well written!!
Of course Point 1 is a real attention needer for mine!
Also, this extra character or characters occurrences when
replying to emails seems to be more prevalent?

Subject: [Braillenote] KeySoft 9.1: Official letter to HumknWare
Tech Support
Hi folks,
Just sent an official letter to HW Tech Support on bugs we've
seen with 9.1. Here's the copy:
To whom it may concern,
Hi. It's Joseph Lee, a BrailleNote Apex BT user running KeySoft
9.1 release. I'd like to take this time to thank you for useful
feature sets in 9.1, particularly reading tables for doc files
and password protection of the unit. I'm also glad to see that
the software is slightly more stable than 9.0.2.
Just few issues when using the new release, which I hope to see
them resolved in the future with a possible maintenance release.
1. File download: I'm happy to say that I was able to download
large files using KeyWeb. However, I'm sad to find that the
percentage indicator for file download does not appear in 9.1 -
partly due to use of another engine for downloading files. I'd
like to see the return of percentage indicators during file
download operation in the future.
2. Find and replace: I'm glad to see that most of the errors
with find and replace are gone. However, two notable bugs
remain. First, there's no way of replacing a punctuation to
another, say from single quotes to double quotes. Also, if a
word or a phrase to find is the one used for replacing another
string, it will place language indicator before the first
replacement. For instance, if the string to find is "test" and
if it was used to replace the word "work" before, it will not
"really work," as language indicator is placed (this happens
rarely, but it still occurs). I hope to see these resolved soon.
3. Wireless encryption: Apparently Apex has hard time connecting
to wireless networks that use long string for security keys, say
more than thirty-two characters. For instance, Apex connects
fine to a network with shorter string length for security key,
say eight to twelve characters. However, when it tries to
connect to a network with say, sixty-three characters for
encryption key, it will not connect to it - apparently a time-out
exists.
4. File zipping and unzipping: When zipping and unzipping files
or folders, there's no indication of how many of them were zipped
or unzipped after the process has completed in contrast with
other file operations. For example, if a user copies two files
from one folder to another, KeySoft says, "two files copied"
after it is done; however, when these two files are zipped to a
single archive, there's no announcement on number of files zipped
when it is done compressing them. Similarly, when unzipping this
archive, KeySoft does not say number of files found in the
archive. Just a consistency thing that I hope to see it resolved
soon.
5. Unicode key assignment: If a user uses Custom USA or similar
computer braille table, BrailleNote reports exception error when
trying to assign a key combination to a unicode character. This
does not happen if the character is the first character to get
key combination (at that point, the custom table file is created
after key assignment). For instance, if a user wishes to assign
o grave to a key combination and if he or she have assigned n
tilde to another key combination, BrailleNote says, "exception:
command: (number) at (memory address). Access violation reading
0," indicating a memory access issue.
6. Braille Terminal: Under QT models, there seems to be no way
of switching to braille key input via home row now, nor
assignment of F11 and F12 keys on the QT keyboard (tested this
when I used a USB keyboard with my unit).
7. Eloquence: When a phrase (particularly dates) with a number
proceeded by a zero is encountered, Eloquence says "zeroth"
something. This happens when there is a single digit immediately
following a zero. For instance, the phrase, "Tuesday, March 01,
2011," is spoken as, "Tuesday, March zeroth one, 2011" when
reading the phrase with "read current sentence" command. When
reviewing the phrase word by word, Eloquence says "zero one" when
01 is encountered.
8. Keyboard freezing: When using speech in conjunction with
braille display, the keyboard freezes when writing a long
document. After a minute or so, the keyboard responds again.
9. Reading foreign language text and speech slowing down: With
the Multilingual enabled, when reading a passage written in a
foreign language, speech slows down (both Eloquence and KeyNote
Gold does this) when the foreign text is read.
I hope to see the above issues resolved soon - so that the Apex
can be more stable and usable under 9.1. Thanks for your
considerations into this matter and hope to see your reply soon.
Sincerely,
Joseph S. Lee
University of California, Riverside
Cheers,
Joseph
