I agree in principle, but I just can't see anybody using NVDA as a production screen reader in a business environment, for instance. It simply (and this is the really sad thing) doesn't have the same investment in crude hacks and workarounds that the commercial ones do. Even Serotek's offering has started to go down that path, albeit not to the same horrible extent as JAWS and Window-Eyes. On the other feeler, Window-Eyes (my primary WinDoze screen reader until quite recently) has finally embraced UIA, which means that they're starting to understand the merits of correct screen reading using the operating system facilities, and perhaps this bodes well for the future of Windows, when a screen reader uses the information provided, rather than scraping it out in a half-hearted fashion. Yes, I agree blind people should not pay extra, also - that's why I'm almost completely transitioned to the Mac, and use Linux, both already far advanced from Windows in the screen reader arena for precisely the reasons I've explained. I gave $50 AUD (about £30) to NVAccess. At risk of bothering other listers on BrailleNote, let's take this discussion private, eh? You can also join me-mates if you want and send your mail there.
