Below is the summary for the second edition of the chat.
Technically, this was the third, but the one earlier today was
called off due to lack of attendees.
The major theme is product comparisons, considering the HIMS
update (Twitter and Google Talk integration). We would like
these features, but not at the expense of unsolved bugs in
existing features.
If offered, we think that there should be an "application-based"
model, where users pay for the apps they want and not for an
upgrade with features they will never use, which take up space
they can never get back.
Regarding Twitter, we discussed the interface we would like to
see. Basically, each timeline would be a list with an action
menu, like in keymail, for retweeting and so on.
The idea of an sdk was brought up. HIMS already offers one, for
free, and so devs do not have to charge for the apps they create
and they can help hims get away from the "all-in-one" model for
updating their firmware which they, and hw, use.
We then moved to hw's lack of communication. They own the list,
yet they leave us alone and never comment. We also never hear
from them about suggestions, bugs, and so on. For such an
incredibly expensive device, you would think we would get more
feedback at the very least. One user points out that the lack of
feedback is a point of contention and could lose sales.
Pricing was also discussed; initial price, service contract, and
so on. The display seems to be the worst in terms of price.
We then moved to other displays, briefly talking about new
technology, such as http://www.senseg.com, being the next
generation of braille displays, hopefully cheaper. It was
suggested that we bring this technology to other areas, such as
http://www.nfb.org's message boards.
One user then talked about how blind people need to be more
proactive in talking to blind foundations and also mainstream
organizations. This is the only way we can get new technology
ideas to the AT companies and push them to what they need to do.
Mainstream integration is also vital. Contact: nabs, nfb, afb,
accessible computing, bgz, mobile access, apple user lists
(aiphone, macvissionaries), and so on.
Then we answered more questions from the list. First, flash:
there is no support for it, and we cannot say if there will ever
be or not.
Then we moved to keymail. A corrupt keymail database is not
cause for reformatting the flash disk. It is odd, though, that
keymail's database is the only one to ever get corrupted; no
other database does, and keysoft uses plenty of them.
