Hi,
Hmmm, I'm not sure. When the display fades, do you hear speech say "braille off"?
Cheers,
Joseph

Hi,
Try: plug in the charger and flip the power switch to off and on

a hard reset (hold the

hard reset does not help, try removing and reinserting the
battery, as the likely problem might be that the battery is not
recognizing AC power for some reason.

Since the topic of Apex resets has been on the list today, I am

 the
below information on that subject from an old message. Please
do as Joseph
suggests and be careful with this information. If you have any

 Hi folks,

Since a topic of resets and explanation came up, I thought I'd
just give a brief overview of what the resets do on the Apex:

There are five resets possible on the Apex (in increasing
severity): Soft (Warm) Reset, Hard (Hardware) Reset, Clear
(Registry) Settings, Clean (ROM) Reset and Erase Data.

The Warm Reset is equivalent to restarting a computer. To
perform
this reset, just press the Reset button on the Apex.
When this reset is carried out, Apex will attempt to save
information that it is working on, shutdown KeySoft and restart
the unit. When the unit restarts, Bootloader comes up and loads
the KeySoft image from ROM, displaying "starting keysoft" while
 it is performing its job.

The Hard Reset is equivalent to forcibly shutting down and
restarting your computer by holding down the power button (don't try this on your computer). To perform this, press and hold the Reset button for about five seconds until a beep is heard. This
disregards whatever the operating system is doing and forces
hardware restart to occur. If a memory intensive task such as
writing to Flash was occurring when the reset was done, Apex
will
launch Scan Disk and attempt to scan the memory for errors.

The Clear Settings is useful to return KeySoft settings to
factory defaults. Not only it erases keysoft.ksd from Flash
Disk,
but also reloads flash files from ROM (those which were most
likely missing from the ROM image). To perform this reset, hold down DOTS 4-5-6 (JKL) and press the Reset button. Hold down the
keyboard keys until about three seconds after the beep sounds.

The Clean Reset not only performs equivalent activity for Clear
Settings, but it initializes RAM Disk (keysoft system disk) by
erasing system information stored there and removes any
extensions you've installed. (will not affect the licenses).
When this is done, additional files for proters will be reloaded
in addition to regular ROM image files. To perform this reset,
hold down DOTS 1-2-3 (FDS) while pressing the Reset button.
This
reset should be done only when advised by HW (likely), since you
 need to reinstall programs.

The ERASE Datai.e. Flash Disk Format is a hidden command under
Support Information Mode which will perform Clean Reset and
format at the same time. This reset should be carried out if
cleaning the Apex of unwanted data or personal information is a
must - will result in loss of data on both RAM Disk and Flash.
To perform this reset, go to Support Information Mode then press
BACKSPACE with DOTS 1-2-4-5-6( CTRL+Fn+E). When the warning
message appears, press Y to confirm; upon doing this, Apex will
shut down in order to format the Flash Disk, and when finished,
 will perform Clean Reset.

There's another command, mostly used to restore files for Flash
Disk from ROM (mostly things which are missing). To do this, go
to Support Information Mode then press BACKSPACE with
 R(CTRl+Fn+R).

As I always say in these kind of posts: use these at your own
risk! A universal caution with resets is that you need to do
them
at appropriate times and when advised by the manual, other users
and by HW, especially anything more severe than Clear Settings
reset. I'd wish to talk about what really happens while Apex is
booting, but because of technical nature of it, I'd rather not
write about it for now (just that it goes through what any
 computer would go through).

Hope this helps. My apologies (mostly at HW) if I'm giving out
info that I'm not supposed to...

 Cheers,
 Joseph

 ?Hello,
My name is Joshua Gregory. I use a BrailleNote Mpower with a
32-
cell braille display running KeySoft 8, build 21. I am writing
this letter on behalf of myself as well as the BrailleNote list.
I, as well as the list, am concerned that if certain features
are not introduced to KeySoft, such as better word support, or
an
SDK, that the BrailleNote will no longer be as competitive in
the
blindness PDA market as it is today in just a matter of a few
years or so. For instance, the Braille Sense products from HIMS
now have an SDK available for programmers interested in writing
programs for the Braille Sense, with the upcoming 6.0 firmware
release from HIMS. We, as BrailleNote users, do not yet have
this available to us and we would like to see this implemented.
With this, we could write games for the BN, such as uno, and
also
write programs that we could all benefit from.
We are also concerned with the absence to response from hw
staff to questions posed on the list. While many people on the
list are able to answer most of the questions posed there, we as
a collective group strongly feel that more communication would
be

 Hi Joseph
I for one would like to hear your thoughts expanded here!
the best time to make the correct decision is to see what HIMS
does with version 6.0 firmware of theirs. But at a personal
level, I'm convinced that the underlying OS would give HIMS a
headache later - unless if HIMS decides to upgrade later. In
order to spare misinformation, I'd rather not discuss my
reasoning here - unless if and only if enough people demand it,
but I'm sure you already know why.

 Cheers

Hi folks, but mostly at HW staff,

Well, the long awaited recording of the eighth BrailleNote Chat
is now
up on the site. Due to editing difficulty on my computer, I had
to use
my backup machine for linking the files. As usual, the files
are
 located under Podcast Radio.

In addition, I'm now accepting suggestions for a major version
of
BrailleNote PBWorks, as well as a new user site that is
scheduled to
be launched soon. The new user site will feature rewritten
articles
from PBWorks, as well as user submitted documents, reorganized
media
library and a repository of useful documents. For our friends,
an
offline version of the site (at least the articles) will be
availible
as well. The interface will resemble that of KeySoft with a
main menu,
a shortcut list for major sections and others. So stay tuned
for the
next few months as the site is being developed.

The new PBWorks version: In the upcoming release of BrailleNote
PBWorks (codenamed "central"), I (the webmaster), with help from
users, plan to improve navigation experience, as well as to
provide a
downloadable archive of PBWorks articles and incorporate your
feedback. Some of the planned highlights in the new version
include
"navigation menu" where you can navigate to major sections of
the site
from anywhere, a site listing all availible pages and a new page
for
hosting useful documents such as user guides. Just like
previous
incarnations of the site, I plan to incorporate your comments on
the
new version and, if you have something to write about, a chance
for
you to write an article or more so that the developers can post
it on
the site for you (and we'll give you credit). We (I and other
developers) hope to launch this version some time in late summer
to
get many feedback from you (especially from HW staff) on the
site.
Thanks, and looking forward to hearing your comments.

 Dear Josh,

You've written a respectful request. For me, I'm wanting the
Note-taker to grow up and become a PC, especially for browsing
the internet. Perhaps that's impossible with today's
BrailleNote
firmware software interfaces. But at the very least, Humanware
tech people owe us the courtesy of a periodic response to our
 discussion points and questions.

Hi, I have now decided that the Apex is not what I need. I had
the
Apex manual, version 9.0, transcribed into hard copy Braille
some time
ago, so I could study it, I do much better reading than
listening when
I want to really study something. I paid $150 for the manual
and I now
want to sell it. The price is negotiable but I would like to
get near
$150 for it. Thanks for your consideration. Beth

 Hi everyone,

I have a question about receiveing attachments so that I can see
the format correctly, as I am proofreading a document. Can
someone tell me exactly step by step how they should save the
attachment? I have the mPower, build 31, Keysoft 7.5 I believe
it
is. I have an 18 cell line.

One strange thing that sometimes happens when I was trying to
read the attachments that were sent to me incorrectly was that
the word "to" would not be written right next to the word
following it. I'd take a word out and check again and sometimes
that would rectify the situation, timetimes it wouldn't. Also,
it did not show two spaces after paragraphs. Whenever I've
downloaded a book from Bookshare things work just fine. I can
tell the two spaces after a paragraph. So I'm hoping my Braille
Note is not too old to receive and proofread attachments. Just
need to know how the sender should save them. I did call
Humanware and they said that there would be three choices, and
not to add an extension onto the document before saving, that
the
extension would be added automatically. And which of the three
choices should be used? I wasn't told that. I gave this
information to the person trying to send the attachments but it
 didn't help.

Thanks for any suggestions. Really hope someone will know the
answer. I know the Apex makes things much easier, but I don't
have it and doubt if I could get it.

 Linda

Try rtf (rich text format) or word 97-2003. Also, there should
be no
tables, images, or other formatting aside from basic paragraph,
page,
and line breaks. Bold, italic, and other fonts should work
fine,
though may not show in braille.

Just another thing to add here. Sometimes, rich text
attachments
sent through to the mpower do not work. It's important that you
tell the person sending the attachment to send in plain text.

End of Braillenote Digest, Vol 2645, Issue 1
 ********************************************

Hi all,

I have an Apex which has a lot of quirks in my opinon.
Anyway, I transferred a lot of files to it via flash drive. I
haven't
been able to get it to come back on despite trying to reset it
and
putting it on the charger. I thought it might have died at
firs,t as
it does not have a great battery life.
I would like to get it back up and running without sending it off
to
HW. I was able to get my Mpower to come back on, but I can't
remember
exactly what I did.
Any suggestions would be great as I need the note taker with the
braille display.

Thanks a million,
Liz

Thanks! I will try that when I get home.
Any idea why the braille display just fades and I can't get it to come
back on in the middle of reading a book? If I am hitting anything
inadvertently, I would love to know about it to prevent this from
recurring in the future.
