Steve,

As one lawyer to another, I use the Apex in my work as a barrister here in the UK. I must say that, touch wood, I have never found the difficulties you report here. I use the QT32 unit running the same software as you. The trick is to keep it on its toes. Let me ask you this: when you are taking a note of the hearing in your wordprocessor, where is the trial bundle? Do you have the trial bundle open in the bookreader? This is what I do, with the result that I am nearly always doing something with the Apex throughout the hearing. From our professional point of view this is also extremely effective if you want to refer the witness or the judge to bundle references. I have not found it to freeze at all when typing, or indeed when inactive although like I say I don't keep it inactive long. The only time I have to reset is when it becomes sluggish, which can happen occasionally.

Steve I would also say don't dispense with your Apex as a reliable machine for the court. Even if you have a laptop something will go wrong with that from time to time. it is good practice to save your work regularly, whatever machine you have. I doubt that any alternative kit will be as flexible or effective in a court setting, particularly given that much of what you do is done on your feet and a considerable portion in corridors outside court.

Best,
Mark
