Yes, any service that supports pop3 (and they all should) will work.
It is other protocols, such as IMap, that will not work. SSL is also
supported on incoming and outgoing pop3 connections.

I use the internal storage and keep a backup, but that is with the
apex. When I had an mPower, I used a cf card for everything which I
left plugged into the side slot in a pcmcia adapter all the time.

Removing before a reset is good practice, but I have never lost any
data if I did not remove. In fact, on the mPower, you used to have to
reset with a thumb drive plugged in before said drive would be
detected. Windows 7 does have a remove feature, but it is harder to
get to. The easiest way I have found is to go to the drive in the
"computer" icon, right click it, and select "eject" (even if it is not
a disk, this will do the same as the "safely remove" feature).
On the bn family, nothing special needs to be done. However, I have
noticed that the light on a thumb drive will blink for a few seconds
after something is done on the drive. Therefore, to be on the safe
side, I wait about five or ten seconds before removing any drive,
thumb drive or not.

Yes, a nice one with magnets that hold the flap securely closed but
are not as loud and annoying as velcro. The side flaps, behind which
are the power switch, audio and power jacks, reset and record buttons,
and mini usb port are secured with velcro, and that velcro does not
hold together too well (the flap on the right side of my case no
longer stays closed at all). Overall, though, it is a secure case that
still lets you remove the apex if you have to, for example to replace
the battery or read the braille serial number. There is even a pocket
on the outside for cards or flash drives. I use it to hold my iPod
Touch, connected to the apex via bluetooth, so it is like having two
computers in one.
