Isn't the empower supposed to come out with another release that improves the function of the word processor? thanks

I am using a mPower with KeySoft 7.5 as versions 8 and 9 have few features that would be useful to me. Some folks wanted a chat client, but that feature is not worth it for me. I have some SMA or prepaid upgrades, but getting annoying memory announcements for a few little fixes is not worth the effort. I am looking to have an Apex for the KeySoft version 9 improved Word support. JD Townsend Helping the light dependent to see. It might be worth looking at the latest iOS builds (I can do that) to see whether the issues have been fixed there. Nope. Still broke. If there's been any development, there's no evidence of it here. This is a beta, don't set your hopes on anything I say or don't say, but I'm less optimistic than I was before. Still, there is always the *possibility* that HumanWare will yet update KeySoft and hence the protocol to work with iOS. Such proceedings would be needlessly secretive, and in any case would require an update to KeySoft which would open the possibility of legacy mode being restored. But whatever. I would like to do this and am now writing with a follow-up question. It turns out that the unit I'd like to trade in is the one I sent in earlier this summer for general maintenance at HumanWare. My concern is that, on the assumption that it would be sent back to me, I didn't take the time to delete any of my personal settings and other private information. If I do end up trading this unit for an Apex (and, thus, not receiving it back), can I count on HumanWare to delete everything before sending it to another client? Do I need to ask them to do this? Thank you! I know that these devices are compatible, at least theoretically, and I'm wondering how using the Apex and IPhone together has worked for others on this list. Can you use the Apex to control the IPhone or does it only work as a Braille display? Can you text with the Apex, as long as it's connected to the IPhone? Can the Apex read text that's been scanned with the IPhone's camera? Any information would be greatly appreciated as I decide whether to go ahead and purchase an IPhone. Thank you! In short, though, it works quite well for both typing and reading, with just a few bugs/annoyances. I have an iPod 4g, but it is basically the same thing as far as working with braille. Also, please note that the iPhone5 may come out as soon as this fall, so if you can stand to wait to get one, you will be better off to wait for it. > Can you use the Apex to control the IPhone or does it only work > as a Braille display? It works for both input and output. You can type and read grade 1 or 2. Computer braille is not yet supported, and there is an odd contraction translation thing that takes getting used to and can make writing things like web addresses or email addresses rather tedious. > Can you text with the Apex, as long as it's > connected to the IPhone? Yes. > Can the Apex read text that's been > scanned with the IPhone's camera? Any information would be > greatly appreciated as I decide whether to go ahead and purchase > an IPhone. If there is text to read, VoiceOver (the screen reader in iOS) will read it, meaning that it will appear on the apex. However, OCR apps for the iPhone are really not there yet. Part of the problem is the relatively low quality camera on the iPhone; if the rumors are true, the iPhone5 will have an 8mp camera, much better for OCR. This is why I suggest waiting (plus the upgrade will include better and faster internals, though no details are yet official). Also, as an aside, there is a great feature where you can enter terminal mode on the apex, turn on/unlock the iPhone, and be connected. This means that you can turn off speech on the phone and leave it in a pocket or handbag, since the screen only reacts to contact with skin and similar substances and will not be affected by cloth. Then, whenever you want to, just enter terminal mode on the bn and hit the lock button on the iPhone. With no speech to worry about, the phone will pair and braille will appear on the apex, completely avoiding the need for headphones just to check a text or your Twitter account. I did this a lot in school, and it basically let me have two computers in one. > > Thank you! > > Lucy > > ___ > Replies to this message will go directly to the sender. > If your reply would be useful to the list, please send a > copy to the list as well. > > To leave the BrailleNote list, send a blank message to > [email protected] > To view the list archives or change your preferences, visit > http://list.humanware.com/mailman/listinfo/braillenote > > -- Have a great day, Alex (msg sent from GMail website) [email protected]; http://www.facebook.com/mehgcap ------------------------------ Message: 11 Date: Thu, 30 Jun 2011 18:49:07 -0400 From: Tyler <[email protected]> Subject: [Braillenote] programming on Brailleationote mPower To: [email protected] Message-ID: <20110630224907.27639.87871.levelstar.mail@everest> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Hello Humanware and Humanware users. I use a Braillenote mPower BT running KeySoft 6.2 build 27, if that matters. I have been programming for five years, or, as I should say, since I was nine years old, and was discovering technology. On my Braillenote, I wrote JavaScript scripts embedded in HTML files (with an HTM extension), and ran them in KeyWeb (obviously written in Key,word). What other kind of programming or command-prompt-like things can I do from Keyword to run in other programs? I also manually create computer-braille tables in CBT files (that actually work when installed in the Dictionaries folder and selected from display options), as well as KeyList KLT databases. ------------------------------ Message: 12 Date: Thu, 30 Jun 2011 18:57:04 -0400 From: Alex Hall <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [Braillenote] programming on Brailleationote mPower To: Tyler <[email protected]> Cc: [email protected] Message-ID: <[email protected]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Well, if you upgraded to ks7 or later, you would have access to text adventure games (z5 or z8 files). You could use Inform, the programming language for these games, to write programs, but there is not much support for math or object oriented programs, so it is hard to say how far you would get. JS is the best thing I have found for programming on a bn. Let me share a few things I have discovered about it: 1. The only event handlers supported are onClick, onLoad, and onUnload. Nothing with focus, blur, key events, dblClick, mouseOver, or mouseOut will work. 2. If your program does not run and you have no clue why, try removing the semicolons after any array declarations. I have no idea why, but this often seems to help. 3. The bn does not support millisecond or better times; it can only go down to the second. 4. Updating html elements with a call to innerText or innerHTML will not work at all (this is part of what is known generally as dhtml, dynamic html). Similarly, no ajax calls or other non-reloading updates will work. On 6/30/11, Tyler <[email protected]> wrote: > Hello Humanware and Humanware users. Sorry, I should have mentioned this. VoiceOver comes on the following: *any iPod fourth generation *any iPod third generation that is either 32gb or 64gb *any iPhone fourth generation *any iPhone 3GS that is 16gb or above (I could be wrong on this one) *any iPad, whether first or second generation As to which works best, VoiceOver will work with all of them the same, so the apex will never care. However, it is sometimes more convenient to have an iPad, with its much larger screen, as it lets you feel around the screen more and makes things easier to find, plus it can show more at once. Of course, the iPod is much smaller (I often carry mine in the front pocket of my Apex's case), while the iPhone is much smaller (same size as the iPod) but can make phone calls, go online through the cellular network, handle text messages, and so on. In addition, the iPhone4 is the only one of the line of products to have a flash for the camera, which can also be used as a flashlight and, people say, makes OCR and bar code scanning better than the iPod's cameras or those on the iPad2. I refer you to apple.com for exact specifications on the devices, since I do not remember all the details. Please feel free to ask for more clarification on any of this!
