Further than you think.  ZBsic and ZChess are superb abuses of the Z-machine 
which demonstrate just how powerful the Z-Machine really is.  OK, so it doesn't 
have file I/O or superb random generators, and its object-oriented concepts are 
significantly geared towards Interactive Fiction (which, in my honest opinion, 
is fundamentally better than any academic concept of OO embodied by other 
languages), but then neither do basic, or javascript!  Give it a try.
