This went to just me, but I believe it was intended for the list, so here it is.

The problem with a simple supply/demand argument is that price elasticity,
that is, the effect on demand of changes in price is not linear. There is a
point where demand falls off vertically, a price at which no one will be
willing to continue purchasing the product. This point is affected by a
combination of other market forces, chiefly the price points of other
products. In a world where mainstream products are closing in on
accessibility, high-priced, specialty products approach this point of peril.
I will certainly never purchase another specialty note-taker, even though I
love the Icon and its children, and haven't been able to justify a
BrailleNote upgrade since 7.2. Now of course it's beyond ridiculous for me
to consider.

State agencies are a distorting factor in this market, creating artificially
price inelastic demand, but in the current environment of budgetary
constraint, if I were still in the AT teaching industry, I'd be pushing
off-the-shelf solutions wherever possible to get more bang for everyone's
buck, and to train new users on technology that's likely to be supported for
longer.
