Hello all,
For anyone using a braille display with iOS5, here are some things I have found. All of these are only with an iPod Touch and an Apex, but they should be universal across all iTouches and displays.

1. In previous iOS versions, you used space-2-3-6 and space-3-5-6 to select and de-select text. In iOS5, you now use space-2-3-5 and space-2-5-6. Note that, on the Apex, you will need to press the passthrough command, enter with 4-5-6, before using space-2-3-5 as this is keysoft's task menu command. 2. As before, space-g toggles between grade 1 and grade 2 (now called contracted and not contracted). However, unlike before, this command will change not just the output, but the input as well. Yess, the input: you can finally type in grade 1 and forget about the long delays and odd errors caused by the iTouch's less-than-perfect grade 2 translator. You cannot type in one grade and read in another at the same time, but switching is as easy as one keystroke. 3. Perhaps even more exciting is the option to switch into 8-dod computer braille (space-2-3-6 is the toggle). For instance, my passwords are very long and complex, involving lower- and upper-case letters, numbers, and punctuation. Before, it was a nightmare trying to type them in braille. Now, though, I just hit the 8-dot toggle, type in 8-dot English computer braille (I assume the braille table is based on your language setting), and then toggle out of 8-dot braille when I'm done. This makes email addresses easier as well, since the at sign can easily be entered. 4. There are new commands on the touch screen for which I do not yet have a braille equivalent. These include the Notification Center envokation, the item chooser, the word definer, and the control labeler. It could be that, like tripple tapping or a few others, these just don't have braille counterparts. 5. If you upgrade and use a display, you may have to re-pair it initially. I just had to find it in the list and double tap it to get it working again after the upgrade. 6. The old bug where moving the rotor would un-mute speech is, unfortunately, still with us. Please email [email protected] to complain about this as it is a serious problem for those wanting to use braille only, especially with how useful the rotor has become in iOS5.

Have a great day,
