Hi,
For a number of years now, BN users had chat sessions at Talking
Communities conference room located at Blind Cool Tech website.
HowevereaSomeone from another list proposed that we move onto
TeamTalk, a free chat client for various platforms (Windows, Mac
and others). The chief reason being that, since BCT chat room is
geared towards general tech discussions, we should have a
dedicated chatroom for discussing BrailleNote related materials.
Thus, I'd like to get an opinion from you on future location of
BrailleNote Chat (which the next one might be early next year).
After taking a vote (which will be opened till October 31st),
we'll announce the results and the one with the most votes would
be the location for the chats.
Here are the options:
Option 1: Current location - Blind Cool Tech Chat Room
The chief advantage is that it has been the location for past
BrailleNote chats, so the participants would know what to do to
participate. The downside is that, since it's sort of a general
chat room and since our chat (for the most part) discusses
specialized topic, we might need a dedicated room. This is also
true because other people, particularly Bookshare Volunteers use
this particular room for their meetings.
Option 2: Dedicated chat room provided by Talking Communities
The advantage of this approach is that we get the best of both
worlds - familiarity with current sotup and an extra incentive
because of the fact that the chat room is dedicated for
BrailleNote-related discussions. The downside is payment - a
room for 25 people costs $100 a month, while a room for 50 costs
$150 a month. The minimum size is 10, useful for small
discussions, but with the expectations of high participation
(particularly when KeySoft presentation would take place), ten is
small (at least 25 or 30).
Option 3: TeamTalk server
The advantages are practically unlimited number of participants
(1000 per server) and the setup necessary for setting up a server
is already availible as part of client software. The downside is
learning curve (but it is easy to grasp) and the fact that you
need to install the client on your computer (not notetaker,
sorry) to use it (there's the Classic edition, suitable for
screen readers in mind). Besides, it's an unchattered territory,
so we may need some testing to do.
Waiting for your votes. If you have comments on this survey,
please email me at [email protected] with your choice and
reasons for voting for your choice. Or, if you have suggestions
on other chat clients/server, let me know.
Thanks for your considerations.
Cheers,
Joseph
