Hi,
The gauge reading on the Classic is quite different from what most people would expect. You see, the numbers that represent the capacity value are not really milliamp values - rather, its just a calculation based on what the Classic thinks its capacity is when in fact it is not. It defaults to 33792 because it doesn't know its "true" capacity; as the battery gets older, this offset reading decreases by multiples of 256.
To do a recalibration on a Classic:
1. Plug the unit to a wall outlet for about four hours.
2. Check Options/Power to make sure that you see 100%.
3. When the battery meter reaches 100%, go to Options/Support Information Mode. 4. Disconnect the AC power and, after doing so, from Support Information Mode, press F. Classic will repeat some things while battery is being discharged. Leave it for about ten to fifteen hours until there's no more sound from the BrailleNote (ignore the battery low or critical message). After the unit has been discharged, plug it into the wall outlet. Classic will come up and say, "battery test completed." Then leave it charged for another two to three hours, and press D from Support Information Mode to see the updated gauge reading (which should be way below 32000). Personally, if the Classic is old and needed battery replacement, then I expect the "real" gauge reading to be below 30000.
Cheers,
Joseph

Subject: [Braillenote] calibrating battery on classic

Hello.

A couple of months ago, I acquired a BN classic which needed new
batteries. Once the batteries were fully charged, the max capacity was somewhere around 44,000. Now, the capacity is around 34,000. I would not worry about the numbers except for one issue. Now, the low battery alert keeps coming on while the battery capacity is about 1.23 and the end of discharge level is 1.08. About every ten minutes, I get a low battery warning. I tried to totally run the battery down, but it would only recharge to 33,792. Please, can someone tell me how to get the
calibration correct?

Carol
