Hi folks, mostly for mPower to Apex users:
The following is a suggested guide and steps on transfering data
safely from mPower to Apex as noted from HW's documentation and
user testing:
Cautions:
1. DO NOT USE CompactFlash cards as backup medium unless: if you
have a USB CF card reader or the circumstances merit using it.
2. Some system files would be protected once backup is done;
thus unprotect these files after restoring them to the Apex.
To transfer data from an mPower to an Apex:
You'll need:
1. A transfer medium. We strongly recommend using either SD
cards or USB drives.
2. THE units themselves.
3. Connection configurations you need.
Recommended procedure:
1. Backup the important files from mPower's Flash Disk to the
storage medium - when prompted, accept the default folder name
for backup (backup date backup).
2. Restore the mPower data to the Apex's Flash Disk.
3. Unprotect the following database files on the Apex's Flash
Disk:
* KeyList folder: address list.cdb, connection
configurations.cdb. In case of connection configurations, see
the note on wireless connections.
* KeyMail folder: email folders.cdb.
* KeyBase folder: all cdb files.
Be sure to show all files to list these hidden files. When the
protection prompt asks you to unprotect database or definition,
press D for database only.
4. Perform a soft reset on the Apex to allow the new settings to
take effect.
5. For KeySoft 9.1 and later: There are a number of connection
configuration changes in regards to wireless access. To access
these configurations, either: remove the wireless networks from
the Apex and recreate them, or modify the security settings on
the wireless configurations. Or if an error message appears from
connectivity menu, delete connection configurations (both
definition and database) and try recreating connections again.
6. Optional: To erase personal data from the mPower, perform
Reset with DOTS 1-2-3 (FDS), then delete ALL folders from Flash
Disk. After deleting everything (including protected files),
perform a 4-5-6 (JKL) reset to reinitialize system files.
Differences between mPower and Apex:
* Memory: 64 MB of RAM on mPower versus 256 MB on Apex.
* Processor: Slightly faster on Apex.
* KeySoft: performance improvements although slowness on
Internet-related tasks have been observed.
* Recording: no FM radio recording due to different audio chips
and settings in use.
* Internet: no more memory issues, although security alerts
appear due to Apex not working well with secure site's name.
* Upgrade: different procedure from mPower - and it is easier to
follow.
* KeySoft extensions: installed by default; all the user needs is
the unlock key. In certain situations, installation of the
extension package may be required.
* Storage: 128 MB of Flash on mPower versus 8 GB of Flash on
Apex. No direct support for CF cards; one needs to use USB CF
card reader to view CF card data. No PC card support. Supports
both regular and high capacity SD cards up to 32 GB, with room
for supporting extended capacity cards up to 2000 GB.
* Connectivity: Built-in wireless and Bluetooth chips; supports
WPA and WPA2 (both personal and enterprise) support, AES support,
Bluetooth headset support; no infrared nor internal modem
(requires USB modem), no serial port (requires USB serial adapter
provided by HumanWare), built-in VGA port and Ethernet port.
* Miscellaneous: removable battery, removal of battery status
commands from Support Information Mode but other advanced
commands added.
Well, congratulations on getting an Apex.
Cheers,
Joseph
