I have a feeling Humanware made the decision to hide away all the
battery management tasks for the Apex simply because it's a lot easier
to replace, and to make it simpler for the users.

By the way, I have to hand it to you Aine: you know BrailleNotes
inside and out! Great to have you on the list.
