The iPod Touch and iPhone are both almost the same, except that
the
iPhone lets you go online anywhere and it can act as a phone.
Contacts, sms, and other phone features also have the benefit of
using
VO and having the same interface as the rest of the device.
However,
the iPhone does require either a data plan with a carrier, or you
could buy one from a pre-paid carrier like Cricket. It costs more
up
front, but the monthly bills are much lower. The iPod costs less
than
the iPhone (unless the phone comes from a carrier like Verizon or
T-Mobile) but has no data charges to it. I use my iPod more as a
PDA
than a music player, and it is immensely helpful. Basically, the
iPhone will cost more to use since you pay monthly charges for
its
accessing the cell network, but you have internet/phone anywhere
you
have cell coverage. The iPod needs a wifi connection, but has no
charges with it past the initial amount you pay for the device.
We
should see a new iPhone model coming this fall, and there may be
a new
iPod model as well, so if you can stand to wait a few months it
might
be worth it.
I have some questions regarding
iDevices and my Apex bt with the 32 cell display running keysoft
9.1.
I don't remember for sure, but I think there is a keystroke in
the
terminal on 9.2 that is not in 9.1, and you may find it helpful
to
have it. It is a bypass command for terminal commands that are
the
same as keysoft commands. For instance, space-o in the terminal
will
enter the options menu, unless you hit the bypass command, in
which
case space-o will scroll right a page on the iTouch. If 9.1 does
not
have that command, a few commands will be impossible on the
iTouch.
Can all iDevices be used with the braille terminal on the
Apex or just some of them? If just some of them, then which ones
can and can not be used? Which generations of iDevices will and
will not work with the braille terminal on the Apex? 1, 2, 3, 4
and so on?
Only the iPod Touch series will work, and only the third and
generation 16gb or above, or any fourth generation. The iPhone
3gs
works, but again only 16gb and above. Any iPhone 4 or 4s will
work.
Any iPad will work, regardless of generation or capacity. No
other
iPod will work.
In terms of iPods, Will only the iPod touch work with
the braille terminal on the Apex or will the iPod classic and
iPod mini and other iPods work as well?
See above.
Do all iDevices come with
voiceover or just some of them? If just some, Then which ones?
If
an iDevice does not have voiceover or voiceover is turned off,
will keynote gold speech on the Apex speak for the iDevice?
Again, see above. Any unit that has VoiceOver will support use of
a
braille display. If VO is not present, no connection can exist
between
the device and a bn. Keynote Gold can never be used to speak for
the
iTouch, even if VO is present.
Can
you use the Apex to turn on voiceover on the iDevice?
No, since it is VO that handles the connection to the apex in the
first place. You can turn VO off with an apex, but not on.
Do all
iDevices have blue tooth or only some of them? If only some,
Then
which ones?
With the exception of the 8gb iPhone 3gs and 8gb iPod Touch third
generation, all the devices I listed as supporting VO have
bluetooth
and can support a braille display.
Can you use the braille terminal with a usb cord from
the iDevice to the Apex or does it need to be a blue tooth
connection?
Bluetooth only.
Does the iDevice need to be running ios 5 like in the
podcasts about iDevices and the apex, Or will any version of ios
work?
Any version above 4 will, I think. Still, there is really no
reason to
want to stay on an older iOS version unless you get an iPhone
3gs,
which can be slowed down by new iOS versions. Still, if you do
get an
iTouch, I'd avoid the 3gs altogether. In fact, as a side note,
you may
want to wait for the iPhone5 (we assume it will be coming this
fall)
if you end up choosing to go with a phone instead of an iPod.
Will the Apex charge the iDevice? If it will, Then does it
need to have the ac adapter on or can it charge the iDevice with
its battery?
It will not.
Finally, Because iTunes does not work on the Apex,
How do you use the Apex to put music on the iDevice?
You don't. You need a pc running iTunes to do this, unless you
buy and
download music right from the device. That said, you could use an
app
like Songbox which will play music you store in your Dropbox
instead
of from the iTouch's music library. This lets you avoid iTunes
altogether, though an internet connection is required to play
files
(an iPhone would give you that connection anywhere).
