Hi, all. Here's the list of sounds and what they mean. This should help
anyone who wants to change the sounds on their bn.
chatmsg.wav; plays when you receive a message in your current keychat
conversation
Keysoft ALARM1.wav; The first planner alarm sound
Keysoft ALARM2.wav; The second alarm sound
Keysoft BELL.wav; I've only seen this used when word wrap is disabled in the
layout menu, and you type a string of text greater than the specified line
length, or you move beyond that line length on an already existing line of text.
Keysoft CLICK.wav; The progress tone is usually heard after one of those "please
wait" messages. This only plays when progress tone volume (review voice) is greater
than zero.
Keysoft DELETE.wav; The tone that plays when you backspace or delete text.
Only plays if delete alert tone volume is greater than zero.
Keysoft ERROR.wav; This is the general-purpose invalid input tone. This only
plays in such situations when you have error alert tone volume set greater than
zero.
Keysoft HYPERLINK.wav; Heard when punctuation is set to two or higher, this sound plays whenever you are reading with speech, and it indicates the next phrase of text to be a link on a web page. You don't hear this if Eloquence is set to use a
different hyperlink speech voice from the regular voice.
Keysoft IR Connected.wav; I've never heard this one, but it should be heard
when a successful infrared connection is made (I'm not sure if the apex has an
infrared port, but the mPower does.).
newmsg.wav; Heard when you receive a chat message, and that message is either in another conversation from the one you're chatting in now, or you are in another task, and a message comes in. In this situation, that sound could even mean the new
message is part of the only open conversation. You'd need to check.
rec_start.wav; Begin recording a memo, and you hear this sound. Incidentally,
in terminal mode, this sound is heard when you switch out of keyboard emulator
mode (space with i on a bt keyboard).
rec_stop.wav; Heard when you stop recording a memo, and also when using space
with i in terminal mode to enter keyboard emulator mode
silence.wav; I'm not sure about this one. I suspect it plays once shortly
after the startup sound after a reset, but it could be something else entirely.
It is just a short length of silence.
startup.wav; This is the sound you hear while performing a reset, shortly
before your bn tells you what keysoft version is running (not the boooooooop
sound; the one that plays later after that one.).
To replace the sounds, you should find some sounds you like, and decide which sounds should indicate which events as listed above. Then, referring to the list, rename your chosen sounds accordingly. After that, I suggest emailing them to yourself
so that the date stamps on the files will be newer than the original sounds. This is the way to make sure the new sounds take effect. Any file whose date stamp is older than one of the original sounds your bn plays for these events will not be
heard. Instead, you'll hear the default sound.
After emailing the sounds to yourself, detach them to the windows folder on your flash disk. If one doesn't exist yet, create one. Once the new sounds are in the windows folder, do a normal reset with nothing held down. After the reset, you
might get a "system files have been updated. please reset" message. Reset again, and if that same message appears, you should only have to do one more reset. Your new sounds are now ready to be heard. The only thing worthy of note now is whether
you're using an mPower.
If you are, like me, you must use the eloquence synthesizer in order to hear most of your new sounds. I'm not sure why this is, but frankly it's annoying to me, since I prefer keynote gold speech. The only sounds you'll hear with kng enabled are,
I think, the startup, recording, and chat sounds. All other sounds will stubbornly remain as the defaults until you use the review voice menu to switch to eloquence speech. The rest of the new sounds will immediately switch on when you do that.
I've been told that apex users need not worry about this annoyance. The new
sounds should play regardless of your chosen synthesizer. I hope you all have
a great day, and that this has been of help to you.
