There's nothing you can do about the thumb-keys unfortunately I don't think, but as for the other problem, it won't always happen. For instance, I just experimented and it would appear that if you go to main menu, or any other menu by the looks, and turn the braille off right there the display should go blank. Instead, it continues to show the last message on the display. Also, the thumb keys don't work while the display is off.
