Often, yes, but not always. The below is perhaps information overload, but the upshot is, just make sure you test the drive before buying it.
Any hard drives with built-in security features (such as hardware encryption etc.) where you have to enter a password before you can access files on the drive, will not work. Hard drives formatted using the newer NTFS file system will not work, so you'll have to use a different file system such as FAT32. Hard drives which have fancy built-in features probably won't work, i.e. I have a Mybook drive which includes something which simulates a CD drive which I can use to install the company's backup software; that drive doesn't work. And you might find that certain other models of drives don't work. Still, plenty of external drives do work with the Apex so finding one that does should not be an issue.
