Updating: sometimes, but only if there has been a maintenance (as in, free) 
update that you did not install. Even then it is not a guarantee.
Time: it depends greatly on what has to be done, but a couple weeks is not 
unreasonable, maybe up to a month. Of course, your wait could be much shorter.
