For your first question: no. As to it being a future feature, I have suggested it multiple times starting as many as seven years ago, and it has not shown up yet, so don't hold your breath.
Now, zipping: unzipping is very useful if you get a zip folder in an email or anywhere else, as it allows you to unzip the contents. The bn info site uses zip files to distribute multiple files at once, and all Bookshare books come zipped. Zipping allows you to, say, send the contents of an entire folder to someone over an email, or copy a bunch of folders to a thumb drive as a single file which you can then unzip on another machine.
