Jane, it's the screen reader that governs what the Braille display does,
so the answer is, no, you can't use your BrailleNote as a display
without a screen reader installed.

Subject: [Braillenote] Windows ME and ACTIVE Sync

  Hi, all.
We are looking into ways to make a windows ME computer accestsible so
I can use it at work--at least somewhat. Will 5.1 work with ActiveSync
and Windows ME? I know it works with XP because I have it installed at
home, but not sure about ME. Also, will the BrailleNote work as a
braille display even if I don't use JAWS or a screen reader program?
  Thanks for your assistance.
Jane
