Lisa, After you have downloaded and received the message: "finished receiving," press enter with e and then I to hang-up immediately. Then you can choose to disconnect and first read your messages. The messages in the outbox will not yet have been sent and should you wish to cancel/delete some of those, you could do so from the outbox and only the remaining messages will be sent whenever you want to do so.
