Hi Chris, I have heard them refered to as pcmia and compacked flash cards. In any event, the cards are the same type for both slots. The difference is that in the side slot, if you want to use a compact flash, you must use an adapter in which the card fits and the other end, which looks like the plug on the superdisk drive goes into the side slot on the bn. When this combo is inserted, it is flush with the bn, thus you can close the case. I don't know about the new leather ones, as I have an older case. The compacked flash card fits directly in the back without the need of an adapter. Right now, I have two compacked flash cards in my unit, but if I use the disk drive, then I remove the one on the side, adapter and all. The fun thing is, you don't have to take the card out of the adapter unless of course, you want to change cards. Hth
