Just to reiterate a point that Jonathan made, ie the length of the file
doesn't seem to be the problem.  I've quite happily played 30+ MB files yet
had absolutely no success with some files of 5 MB or less.

As the sampling rates have been varied, too, the problem seems to be
somewhat random and, therefore, difficult to replicate/fix!
