Yes I've done it with the case closed and an earphone. That's fine for
following routes you know, not so good if you need to create routes (in bad
weather I mean). I do find I have to lock the keyboard (from within the GPS
software) so that keys aren't pressed, and this is a bit inconvenient. I too
would be interested in other travellers' comments.
