Well, I saw my message testing the list, but never saw my first message, so I'm forwarding a copy to the list again.

Subject: My poor BN has lost its voice

Well, guys, the flu bug must be really severe here on the west coast, because my poor BN has lost its voice. It happened while I was away for a family funeral, of all things. I noticed one evening that the BN's speech sounded distorted, and that when I'd turn it on, or press enter, or press the command for current character or something, it would make a pathetic little wheeze or cry. Now the speech is pretty much all gone, except that every once in a while it will make a valiant effort and try to say "speech on" or "speech request" as I cycle through. But usually it's just pathetically silent. Fortunately, it still functioned okay and I was able to do email while away, but it was so quiet: no modem dialing noise, usually no beeps; only the sound of the Braille display changing. I have a call into Humanware's service department, but with all the problems I keep hearing about their phone problems, I just hope their voice mail works. Oh well, if I don't hear back, I can always call back in an hour or so. I just can't imagine what happened to it. I didn't drop it or bang it on anything, and I don't think I said anything to offend it and make it not want to talk to me. But after four years of reliable service, only going in for the mother board upgrade and a battery change, I guess I can't complain too much. But I hate the thought of having to send it away again, especially now that I've also got GPS. <sigh> Oh well, I have my BN from work which I can use as a backup, though it's only version 3.07.

Speaking of versions, does anyone know how much it would cost to have version 5.0 burned into ROM, and whether it's worth it?

Peggy
