For HAM radio people you would use it for connection to a TNC or other radio
equipment that uses ascii communications.

For others you would use it as a connection as a console or command oriented
input device.

While we are talking about these things how about a telnet program for
similar reasons.

A terminal emulator, telnet and ftp, from my perspective would be VERY VERY
useful.
