John,

First, you should check if your laptop has a PCMCIA Type II card slot. Most
laptops do, but when I was shopping around for a laptop last July, I came
across those that have Type I and Type III slots only.

Now if your laptop's PCMCIA card slot is Type II, then by all means, get a
PCMCIA card adapter to use with your cf cards containing stuff from the
BrailleNote like your GPS maps. Transferring files via Active Sync is supposed
to be faster, considering that you can synchronize them, and thus, not having
to bother about already copied files, or files with the same names but with
more content that need to replace the old ones in your laptop. However, as Don
and others have pointed out, Active Sync chokes on very large files.
With the PCMCIA card adapter on the laptop or the card-reader on the desktop,
you can just select all files in the cf card to be copied to your desired
folder in the computer, and when prompted about replacing ones that exist, just
select replying yes to all. Though some files have not been updated since your
last file transfer, having them replaced with the same thing won't take such a
long time.
Finally, note that the PCMCIA sleeve costs only around $10.00.

HTH,
Roselle
