Jim, There is an alternative. If the files didn't have an extension, the BrailleNote wouldn't know they are supposed to be read as being in contracted Braille. It rightly thinks they are foreign files created using a different word processor. I'll discuss what can be done using either Keysoft version 5 or an earlier version.
If this person is running version 5, then he can: 1) Go into Keyword, select the drive and folder, and press SPACE with X (READ with X) to view all file types, and then navigate and hit ENTER on the file from the Braille 'n Speak. 2) Position the cursor at the top of the file, and put a top-of-block marker. Go to the bottom of the file and put a bottom-of-block marker. From within the Block Commands menu, type G for Grade of Braille and then B for grade 2 Braille. If he has a multilingual software installed, then press L from within the Block Commands menu, then G and B, following the prompts. 3) Exit the file and when asked to save it as a Keyword document, answer Y for yes. If he doesn't want to convert it to a Keyword document, then answer N for no, and then enter the File Manager, select the option to rename the file, and give it a .brf extension. If the person is running an earlier Keysoft version, then he can: 1) Enter the File Manager, select to rename the file, and give it a .txt extension. 2) Exit and go into Keyword, select to create a Keyword type Braille document (which is the default file type for BT models). 3) From within the newly created Keyword type Braille document, enter the Block Commands menu, and type I to insert a file. Select the file from the Braille 'n Speak that he had renamed with a .txt extension, and the BrailleNote will ask, "Is this a Braille or text document?" Type B for Braille and that would do the trick. Note that you can do this also in version 5. It's like tricking the BrailleNote to think that the file is in contracted Braille even though the extension says otherwise.
