Hello,

You might try resetting your BN with the reset button with no keys held down before dialing your ISP or using active sink. Sometimes gremlans go away when the BN is reset. I was trying to download a book a couple of nightds ago and I couldn't see any text from the book when I was suppose to be in the file to be downloaded. I reset my unit and everything worked fine!

        Hi everyone,

I've been happily enjoying my BrailleNote since the beginning of September.
I have found it integrates well into my technical program at ITT Technical
Institute where I get to learn about computers and play with gadgets all
day.<smile>

Therefore, I would appreciate any assistance anyone can provide on
or off list with these two problems I have. They are a bit technical, but
I'll try not to be overly wordy about them.<smile>

Please note, this is a brand new machine using Keysoft 5.0 build 24.

First, Email. Whenever I try to connect to my email, I get a
message from the Braillenote speaker saying "unable to dial the number,
please check the number and dial again." I've double and triple checked the
number I use, the exact same number works quite well when I dial my
computer-based internet connection. I can also dial that very same number
by picking up the phone where I hear modem sounds. I've tried putting
commas before and after the number, I've tried it with and without the area
code. My modem is not the PC Tel as listed in my user's guide, it's the
competent internal modem.

When the BrailleNote tries to connect, it takes almost 10 seconds
before I hear a dial tone, then it seems to dial the right amount of
numbers. However, I can tell the pause between my waiting and when the
Braillenote actually dials is way too long!!! I can't seem to make the
delay go away though I've tried various modem strings. I haven't actually
gotten the email to work since of course I can't dial in, but all settings
have been verified with my service provider, atandt. I am going to try
another local atandt number, but is there anything else anyone can suggest?
I've tried telling the Braillenote to wait for a dial tone, or not to wait,
it makes no difference which option I choose.

Second, I can't make Active synch work anymore. It worked for a
couple of weeks until I stupidly deleted a partnership from Activesynch
itself. I connected and reconnected several times, I tried a different
serial cable, and I uninstalled and reinstalled Activesynch. Then I went to
the Microsoft web site and installed the newest activesynch, 3.7 to no
avail. I don't have an infrared port active on this computer, so the only
way I can connect via Activesynch is through the serial port. I tried
several comm ports, I removed and restored the port, in case the driver for
the port was the problem. Still no connectivity.

I then connected my partner's Braillenote to my computer, the
Activesynch came right up and worked perfectly. I then tried my Braillenote
on another computer in our house, sure enough, my Braillenote would not
work, but the other Braillenote worked perfectly with Activesynch. We have
two computers, my computer has Windows 2000 service pack 4, and the other
has Windows 98 second edition.

Due to these weird problems, I ran every reset option I found in the
user's guide, of course after each reset trying the activesynch again. It
seems like something is wrong with my serial port because when I tried to
make JAWS work as a Braille display using the Braillenote from comm1 or any
other comm port, this too failed as well.

I called Humanware and spoke with a very knowledgeable and polite
support specialist named Al who told me I had done everything possible to
make Activesynch work and recommended a flash card which I had just gone and
purchased before calling him. The flash card works quite well, I'm just
waiting for my flash card reader to arrive in the mail.

I've been at this activesynch thing for some time, it would really
help to have that running to transfer documents back and forth from school,
though I'm sure flash will be much faster and better then Activesynch. It
bothers me that this was working before but not now, the only thing I
Changed was software, but this seems like it's a hardware problem.

        Advice, comments?
