Hi Diane,

I use a Braille Blazer with my BrailleNote as well, and I had the problems you
mentioned but only when I started embossing. I experimented on the settings
and ever since I nailed the right ones, or at least the ones that work for me,
then I have been embossing happily. I will give you the list of settings I use
for embossing both Braille and text documents.

1. Embosser Setup Menu:
On your BrailleNote, enter the Embosser Setup Menu (W from the Main Menu,
then E and S) and try the following settings that I use, taking note of the
comments within parentheses.
  Paper length: 25
  Paper width: 32
Use form feed between pages?: yes
Pause after each page?: yes (but only because the Blazer gets choked on
paper, something that doesn't happen when I use my Braille 'n Speak with it;
try setting this to no first and see if you run into problems)
Does your embosser emboss both sides of the page?: no (note that even if you
will use an embosser that Brailles on both sides of the page, you must use this
setting because it's a bug in Keyword)
Page offset: 1 (but this is because I bind the stuff that I emboss; this
setting means that your document, including the left margin, will start the
number of cells you specify, in this case one cell, after the left edge of the
paper; if you will not bind your work, then keep the default of 0)
  Embosser port: parallel
* If I set this to serial, then the other settings are as follows:
BAUD rate: 9600 (used by most embossers)
  Parity: none
  Number of data bits: 8
  Handshaking: Software

2. Format Menu in Braille documents or the Braille Settings of text documents
to be embossed:
Indent first line of paragraph: 2 (which means I don't have to insert two
spaces for indention because the BN will take care of it, but remember that
paragraph boundaries are as defined in the Back Translation Options)
Style of presentation: Identical to source (used for already formatted
documents, like those downloaded from NLS web Braille and similar sites, or
Braille files you've formatted on your computer using a Braille translator like
Duxbury; otherwise, you must select the heading, subheading and paragraph
styles wherever appropriate)

3. Back Translation Options (for the paragraph boundary):
Enter the File Manager (F from the Main Menu), then the Translation Menu (press
T), and the Back Translation Options (press B). Configure the settings by
pressing SPACE with dots 3-4 (CTRL with SPACE) to cycle through the available
options.
What type of paragraph boundary is used in the source document?: indented or
blank lines (this means, you must have two new line markers between paragraphs
or just one new line marker followed by spaces for the indention; another
option is ONE OR MORE NEW LINE MARKERS, which means that you can have each
paragraph as a continuous line, separated by just one new line marker; yet
another option is ONE OR MORE BLANK LINES which is like the first except that
it will not consider indention as the start of new paragraphs)

4. Forward Translation Options (if you will emboss text documents, which the
BrailleNote will do so by first translating to contracted Braille):
  New line translation: leave unchanged
Convert italics font to Braille italics: yes
  Suppress multiple spaces: yes
  Suppress new page markers: yes
  Ignore tabs: yes
Include capital signs: yes (unless you use British English Braille, then set
this to NO)
Suppress blank lines in outline style: yes
Blank lines before and after a heading: 1,1 (applies only for lines that
start with the heading style symbol inserted by pressing BACKSPACE with S or
CTRL with Y for Style of Presentation, and hitting H for the Heading Style)
Heading format: New page, Center line (SPACE with P or CTRL with ENTER, and
ENTER with C or CTRL with E)
Blank lines before and after a subheading: 1,0 (same explanation as for
Heading, but hit S to select the Subheading Style of Presentation)
Subheading format: four Spaces (ENTER with B or CTRL with SPACE four times)
Paragraph format: New line, two Spaces (SPACE with dots 2-6 or CTRL with
ENTER, and ENTER with B or CTRL with SPACE twice)
Revert to paragraph style after how many blank lines?: 2
Size of indent for wrapped lines in the lines and outline styles: 2

Note that with the Braille Blazer, it's best to configure the settings in their
defaults, so that the BrailleNote settings will take effect without conflict.
Also, setting the top margin is tricky. Do NOT rely on automatic top-of-form
setting. Instead, manually move the paper and experiment on how far you should
move its top edge to yield your desired top margin (say, half an inch).
Sooner or later, you'll get the hang of that. But note that it is important to
figure this out to avoid embossing on the page breaks.

HTH,
Roselle
