This is mainly for Laura, but I'm posting this for others who might be
experiencing the same problem, especially since the User's Guide does not
explain this adequately and I've noticed that many users don't know how to view
the contents of their backup folders, thinking that they can only be copied
(not viewed) using the Restore option.

Laura wrote:
"Whenever I do a backup, I cannot view the files within the folder. The only
one is a "folder" file, always with size 518. This is using the directory
option, after viewing all, including hidden files. So, how would I check the
size of them against the size of the ones on the bn?"

At first, I thought this was weird and couldn't understand why she was only
seeing the .fnb file. Then I remembered that .fnb and .exe files are NOT
copied when using the Backup File option in the Utilities Menu. Only the files
that were created &/or modified by the user will be copied. The .exe files
used by Keysoft are found in the Windows folder of the Keysoft Systems Disk so
even if you lose a copy of a .exe file in the Flash Disk, you can copy it from
the KS Disk, and so it is not necessary to back it up. As for .fnb files, they
contain the folder name, and so they are NOT copied during a backup because the
backup folder has its own .fnb file, and that's the one Laura saw.

For example, to see if I could replicate Laura's problem, I used the Backup
File option and selected the Flash Disk as the drive, and Manual as the folder.
If I view the contents of this Flash Disk folder using the Directory option of
the File Manager, I see the files:
15 Command Summary B&Q
ks.idx
ks.toc
Manual
us_bnb.exe

Now if this isn't similar in the reader's unit, don't sweat it, I created the
first three files, that's why others won't have them. If I make a backup of
this folder, one would expect to hear at the end of the operation: "5 files
copied". Well, I did the backup, selecting the cf card as the destination
drive and typing Test for the backup folder, and heard at the end of the
operation, "3 files copied".

I went into the File Manager, pressed D for the Directory option, selected the
CompactFlash card and the Test folder, then viewed all, including hidden,
files, because I suspect this is what Laura did. Just as she had noted, there
was just one file there, the Test.fnb file which is not really copied from the
Flash Disk but was created when the Test backup folder was created. You see,
Laura, when you backup a specific folder, you are not just copying the contents
of that folder but the whole folder itself. This is again another difference
between the Copy File and the Backup File options. I'm afraid this is not
explained in the User's Guide, however.

What happened was that Keysoft created a folder, say in this case it's called
Test, and copied as its SUB-FOLDER the folder in the Flash Disk that you
selected to back up. Again, unlike the Copy File option, it did not just copy
the contents of the source folder, but created such a folder as well but only
as its sub-directory. You probably gave your backup folder the same name as
the folder being backed up that's why you thought the .fnb file you saw was
copied from the Flash Disk, not realizing it's the folder name file of your
backup folder. Like I said, it doesn't copy the .fnb file of the source folder
because this will conflict with the .fnb file for that backup folder.

How to view the backup files then? Now if this doesn't work with your unit,
then I'm afraid your BrailleNote is unique, but in a very negative way, because
it works with my unit like I said in my other post, and I just tried it with
the Test backup folder I've created.

  1) Select the Directory option in the File Manager.
  2) Select the cf or storage card where your backup folder should be.
  3) At the folder name prompt, press SPACE with T (CTRL with T) to switch to
the Directory prompt. This is the step most users are not aware about backup
folders. They are not just folders, they are a nest of folders and you must
use the directory tree-view to see their contents.
  4) Press SPACE to navigate to the backup folder, in my case it was the Test
folder, and hit ENTER ONCE to select it.
  5) Press SPACE again and you will find as its sub-directory the folder in the
Flash Disk that you have backed up. In my case, it's the sub-folder called
Manual (the same name of the source folder). Press ENTER TWICE to select it.
(Note that if you wanted to see the backup directory of the Attachments folder
of the Flash Disk, you just press ENTER once at the Keymail backup folder, then
space again to navigate to its second layer of sub-directories, where you'll
find Attachments.) Pressing ENTER twice not only selects the directory or
sub-directory, but takes you in it.
  6) Press SPACE with X (READ with X) to view all, including hidden, files, and
then SPACE to see the listed items. In my case, I saw:
15 Command Summary B&Q
ks.idx
ks.toc
But the Manual.fnb and us_bnb.exe files are not there, which is logical (see my
explanation in the third paragraph of this e-mail).

You can then navigate to any file and do whatever you want (delete, move,
rename if you're in the Directory option, open if you viewed the files while
within Keyword or Keybook, copy or protect/unprotect if you select the
corresponding option in the File Manager). Press SPACE with I (READ with I) to
get information about the size of the file and the date it was last modified.

HTH,
Roselle
