Hi,

After reading Barbara's post, I had a sort of déja vu, because it reminded me
of Bob's request that there would be a Connect to Service option in the Main
Menu or Keyweb itself, separate from the one in Keymail.
Further, after reading the similar replies and reactions from people on this
list that connecting to one's ISP could simply be done by going into Keyweb
from the Main Menu, I find it hard to believe that this is the answer being
sought, because one wouldn't be able to use Keyweb without getting the prompt
for the Directory of Service to select, and it's quite apparent that Bob and
Barbara know how to use this Keysoft application.

Since Bob has succeeded in explaining his concern, which is not merely about
establishing a connection with the ISP but also to set a saved HTML file with
links to their favorite URLS as the home page and open it WHILE connected, I'm
inclined to think that this is also what Barbara was asking.
May I just confirm that Bob is correct. If you're the sort of person who would
like his favorites, not in the Favorites folder, but in an HTML file as links
you can activate and thus take you to the site which the web address directs
your browser to, then doing so in Keyweb requires that you save that file in
the Flash Disk, open it in Keyweb, and click the link you wish to visit.
However, as Bob has pointed out, this will not take you to the prompt for
connecting to your ISP. Therefore, he is forced to establish the connection in
Keymail, download his messages first, and then switch to Keyweb to open the
file containing links to his favorites.

First of all, when you connect to your ISP using the option in Keymail, you do
not have to wait for all your messages to download before exiting that
application and moving to Keyweb. Once your BN tells you that you have
successfully logged in and you are connected, you can press SPACE with E
(ESCAPE), then type I to hang up immediately. The BN, however, takes time to
accomplish this so you must be patient.
While waiting, you can type Y to remain connected, and press ENTER with
BACKSPACE with I (FUNCTION with 0) to switch to Keyweb. If you know you have
messages in the Outbox &/or Trash folder, press N once or twice to skip the
prompts asking about sending mail &/or emptying the trash. Alternatively, you
can wait for the BN to disconnect, ask you if you wish to stay connected (to
which you reply with Y for yes), and return you to the Keymail Menu, before
pressing the keystrokes to switch to the browser and completely exit Keymail.
The problem here would be sluggishness. As most, if not all, users would know,
the BN works slowest in Keymail, and yes Josh, it is more because of the
database structure than the processor speed (although that plays a role, too).

Here, therefore, is my suggestion:
  1) While still not connected, enter Keyweb by pressing I from the Main Menu.
  2) Press SPACE once, then BACKSPACE to change folders. Select the one where
you saved the file containing the links to your favorite sites. Make sure it
is saved as a .htm file.
  3) At the prompt, "List of favorites in blah-blah folder" (where blah-blah is
the name of that folder, whatever it is, unless you do have a folder named
"blah-blah" and the file isn't there, <laugh>!), press SPACE with X (READ with
X) once to view the list of HTML, text and Braille documents.
  4) Navigate to that file containing your favorites and hit ENTER to open it.
NOTE that you will still be working off-line.
  5) When the file is opened, press ENTER with dots 2-3-5 (CTRL with 1) for the
Favorites Menu. Type A to add the path to this file to the My Favorites folder
where Keyweb looks in by default. I suggest that you give it a name, say
starting with the number 0 or any punctuation like the asterisk, so that it
would be first in the list of favorites there, unless you don't have any other
items saved in the My Favorites folder.
  6) If you are no longer using the default PDI web browser page as the current
home page in Keyweb, then make sure the home page is not set to this file,
because you really cannot load it and be prompted for connection. Instructions
on setting a web page as the home page in Keyweb are given in section 12.8.2 of
the User's Manual. Keep in mind that your current home page must be one found
on the net, not a file saved in your BN or storage cards.
  7) Now, the favorite you have saved, giving you the path for the file with
the links was placed in the folder where that file resides. If the file is not
in the My Favorites folder, then exit Keyweb, enter the File Manager by typing
F from the Main Menu, and then M for the Move File option. Select the folder
containing that file, type SPACE with X (READ with X) to view all, including
hidden, files and navigate to the one with the .url extension. Move it to the
My Favorites folder for easy access.

When you've followed all of the above steps, this is how you can connect to
your ISP and open that file.
  8) Enter Keyweb by pressing I from the Main Menu. The URL for your current
home page (found on the web) will be offered automatically at the address
prompt. Hit ENTER.
  9) Select the Directory of Service you wish to use and establish the
connection, then wait for the current home page to be loaded.
  10) When you're already on your home page, type ENTER with O (CTRL with O),
hit the SpaceBar to enter the list of favorites in the My Favorites folder, and
select the one containing the path to the file with your favorite links. When
the file is opened, you can activate the links properly because you are already
working online.

I know, it isn't perfect but it's more convenient and faster to do it this way,
instead of connecting in Keymail first, exiting that application before going
into Keyweb. Choose a current home page that you know easily loads, like on my
unit, it's the Google Advanced Search page. The default PDI web browser page
also loads fine.

Note that my instructions above are written only to offer a work-around. I now
better understand Bob's suggestion to have a separate option for the Connect to
Service prompt, either in Keyweb itself or the Main Menu.
Another suggestion PDI can consider is to fix this problem with opening an HTML
file while working off-line, clicking on a link to go to the address it should
direct you to, and not being prompted to establish a connection. If Keyweb can
be programmed so that the user will have the option to stay off-line or connect
to his ISP when a link on a locally saved HTML page is activated, then there
would be no need for a separate Connect to Service option from the one in
Keymail.

HTH,
Roselle
