Subject: KeySoft 5.1 Release Notes The following 'KeySoft 5.1 Release Notes', explains how to access the Software Distribution Web (SDW) site, download eligible software components, and install the new software on your BrailleNote or VoiceNote. The companion document 'KeySoft 5.1 Release Overview' should be read prior to proceeding. This provides an overview of the new features provided in KeySoft 5.1, talks about the Software Distribution Web (SDW) site, discusses eligibility to receive the upgrade, and provides answers to a number of typically asked questions. If you don't have a copy of that document you can obtain it by logging onto the SDW site with your Serial Number and Password, and choosing "Release Notes Part 1". Alternatively drop an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] requesting a copy. We apologize for the length of this post, but experience with previous upgrade releases has shown that Clients prefer to be given "more" rather than "less" information. We recommend that you save this document in a safe place, until you are sure that you have no need to refer to it again. KeySoft 5.1 Build 19 Release Notes Pulse Data International 5 March 2004, by Maurice Sloane, BrailleNote Support Manager Revision 1.00 In the following discussion the term BrailleNote applies to all models of the BrailleNote/VoiceNote family of products. Welcome to the KeySoft 5.1 release. This software requires a valid Product Key in order to run. The product authorisation key is automatically generated by the Software Distribution Web (SDW) site, based on the BrailleNote's unique product signature, and forms part of the installation package downloaded for a particular Serial Number. Download packages will only be generated for Serial Numbers registered on the SDW site. A Serial Number will be registered on the SDW providing: 1. Your BrailleNote is currently running KeySoft 5.0 build 24 or has the KeySoft 5.0 Build 25 ROM image. 2. Your BrailleNote was purchased after 1 February 2003, and is fitted with the Second Edition motherboard, as identified by the extra Compact Flash card slot on the back panel. 3. You have purchased an SMA for your BrailleNote. The SMA is normally only available for BrailleNote units that have the new Second Edition motherboards. 4. You have purchased a Single Step Upgrade that upgrades your software from KeySoft 4.01 to KeySoft 5.0. Again, the Single Step Upgrade is normally only available for BrailleNote units that have the new Second Edition motherboards. The remaining Release Notes are divided into 3 sections: Section 1 is a copy of the 'Readme for KeySoft 5.1' file that is installed in the General folder following installation of Keysoft 5.1. The section numbering has been slightly amended to align with the numbering convention used in this Release Note. Section 2 is about accessing the SDW site, confirming your software status, and downloading eligible software components. Section 3 is about installing the KeySoft 5.1 release and the KeySync PC (1.1) software. It also covers aspects such as, installation process, reset procedures, importing "old" Planner files when KeySoft 5.1 is first run, verifying the electronic User Guide, and other known issues. To assist navigation within this document, a list of section topics follows. To allow rapid navigation to this table of contents, an asterisk has been placed in front of the first line in each section. This Read Me introduces KeySoft version 5.1, the latest innovation in software technology for the BrailleNote family of products. The major new feature of KeySoft 5.1 is the completely re-written Planner application, supporting recurring appointments, and synchronisation with Microsoft Outlook. KeySoft 5.1 is a free upgrade for all version 5 customers. For clients having a software maintenance agreement, it will not decrement your SMA count. This Read Me is divided into 6 numbered sections to assist navigation within the document. The sections are: 1.1. Overview. Provides an overview to the features provided in the KeySoft 5.1 release. 1.2. Documentation Changes. Discusses the new electronic onboard manuals. 1.3. Planner files. Discusses the files associated with the new Planner, and what happens to any "old" Planner files generated by KeySoft 5.0 or earlier versions of KeySoft. 1.4. Accessing "old" Planner files. Some recommended practices. 1.5. Importing "old" Planner files. Discusses how to import an "old" Planner file that hasn't previously been imported to the new Planner. 1.6. Synchronisation with Microsoft Outlook. A couple of points worth noting. 1.1. Overview. In our opinion, KeySoft 5.1 gives you one of the most powerful planners on the market today, yet in the familiar friendly KeySoft style where you don't have to grapple with graphical interfaces to get the job done. KeyPlan in KeySoft 5.1 uses a single database to store all planner entries, rather than the separate year files that are used in KeySoft 5.0 and earlier versions of KeySoft. The first benefit of this is that the boundaries between years no longer exist. If you wish to reschedule an appointment from 2004 to a date in 2005, this is easily done. When you make appointments, you can now specify an end time, as well as a start time, for appointments. This allows you to block time in your Planner, and you will be advised if you attempt to make an appointment which conflicts with an existing one. You can choose to accept the conflict or reschedule one of the appointments. The end time can be on a date that is different from the start date, allowing you to schedule appointments that span more than the one-day. KeyPlan in KeySoft 5.1 allows you to specify the location of an appointment, to mark time as free, busy, tentatively scheduled, or out of the office. Some minor changes, such as the Next Appointment feature that now advises you how many appointments you have remaining today, make the Planner even more useful. And most significantly, KeyPlan will support a wide range of recurring appointments. You can schedule your appointment according to dates, or patterns of days, weeks, months or years - for example an event may be on the 25th of every month, or on the third Thursday of every month, or every 25th of March, or every day at 9am, etc. There is a pattern of recurrence to cover just about every type of recurring event you could think of. A new version of KeySync, version 1.1, will mean that you can synchronize appointments with Microsoft Outlook. We've also added the much-requested Word Count feature to KeyWord, allowing you to determine the number of words in a document without having to perform a spell check on the document. For Braille keyboard machines, this is obtained by pressing Space with I from within KeyWord, and for Qwerty machines by pressing Control with Read with I. This will take you to an Information menu, which in addition to allowing you to get the title of the document now lets you obtain a Word Count. 1.2. Documentation Changes. You are strongly encouraged to use the electronic User Guide to "read-up" on the changes introduced in KeySoft 5.1. Chapter 9 on the Planner has been rewritten to reflect the much-enhanced functionality provided by the new Planner, and the Command Summary also incorporates the associated new commands. Appendix G now covers synchronisation of both the Address List and Planner with Microsoft Outlook. As well as those substantial changes, we have also taken the opportunity to improve the accuracy and pertinence of the electronic index entries. 1.3. Planner Files. We will now look at the files associated with the new Planner, and what happens to any "old" Planner files generated by KeySoft 5.0 or earlier versions of KeySoft. As this Read Me file is installed as part of the KeySoft 5.1 installation process we will assume that you have already imported those "old" Planner year files that you wished to carryover from KeySoft 5.0. (Refer to Section 3.2 for further help on this) First, let's look at the files associated with the new Planner application. As for the previous planner, all files associated with the Planner are stored in the KeyPlan folder on the Flash disk. There are 5 files: Planner.dbf This is the main Planner database and it's size will grow as you store more information in your Planner. Don't be concerned that the database size will become excessively large if you create many recurring appointments. This will not happen as the indexing system is designed to minimize database "bloat". Planner.dbt This file contains the field names used in the Planner database. Planner1.ndx This is an index file and facilitates timely access of Planner information. Planner2.ndx This is also an index file. KeyPlan.ksd This is the KeyPlan Definition File and contains user settings relevant to the operation of the Planner. Let's now look at what happened to your old Planner files. During the installation of KeySoft 5.1 you would have been asked if you wished to import the old yearly Planner files into the new Planner database. Irrespective of whether you chose to import them or not, all of the old Planner files have been saved in the sub folder "Old Planner Files", located in the KeyPlan folder. To refresh your memory, the old Planner files were named according to the year they represented. For example, on a BrailleNote BT the 2003 planner file would have been named "2003 planner.kpb" If you have a unit with a Qwerty or computer style keyboard, the file would be named "2003 planner.kpt". Remember, that if you wish to view these "old" Planner files you will have to use Directory mode to navigate to the "Flash Disk\KeyPlan\Old Planner Files" folder. In the next section we'll discuss why you may want to do this. 1.4. Accessing "old" Planner Files. Please keep uppermost in your mind that the new Planner stores its information in a completely different manner to the "old" Planner system. The purpose of the import process initiated following the installation of KeySoft 5.1, is to automatically convert the data in the "old" Planner year files into the new database structure required by the new Planner. If you chose not to import say your 2003 Planner during the installation process, and now you find that you wish to do so, you should follow the process outlined in the next section "Importing old Planner Files". You may think that the "quick" way of getting to your old 2003 Planner is to reset your BrailleNote back to its ROM version of KeySoft, thus going back to the old Planner system. Without going into the details of why you shouldn't do this, we will simply state DON'T DO IT! 1.5. Importing "old" Planner Files. Refer to Section 3.2 of this Release Note for instructions on importing "old" Planner files when KeySoft 5.1 runs for the first time. Let's assume that when you installed KeySoft 5.1 you only decided to import your "old" 2004 planner, but you now also wish to have access to the "old" 2003 planner information. Here is a brief summary of what you have to do. 1.5.1. Select the "Move File" option from the File Manager, and after selecting the Flash Disk, enter Directory mode when you receive the "Folder name?" prompt. 1.5.2. Navigate to "Flash Disk\KeyPlan\Old Planner Files" and select the file "2003 planner". 1.5.3. Select the destination path by navigating to "Flash Disk\KeyPlan", and press Enter to move the "2003 planner" file. 1.5.4. Reset the BrailleNote with no keys held down. 1.5.5. When KeySoft 5.1 restarts it will detect the presence of the "old" 2003 planner file and ask if you wish to import it. Choose yes. 1.5.6. The information from the "2003 planner" file will be imported in the new Planner, and the "old" 2003 file will be automatically moved back into the "Flash Disk\KeyPlan\Old Planner Files" folder. 1.6. Synchronisation with Microsoft Outlook. Before attempting to synchronise your Planner with Microsoft Outlook, you must make sure that you have installed the latest KeySync Server package on the PC side. The new version is 1.1, and is available either by download off the SDW site or from the version 5.1 BrailleNote Family CD. If you haven't previously installed KeySync Server on your PC, you should be aware that the files required to support the dot net framework are large, and if they are not detected as already being installed on your PC, you will be offered the option to download them. This would only be advisable if you have a broadband Internet connection. Alternatively, obtain a copy of the version 5.1 BrailleNote Family CD from your distributor, as the dot net framework files are included along with the KeySync PC server set-up program. Pulse Data International March 5, 2004 End of Read Me file. 2. SDW Site Access and Use. Section 2.1 provides a quick start for experienced Users, providing a step-by-step list of instructions to access the SDW site, logon, determine your software status, and download the presented software. If you encounter problems along the way, it is suggested that you read the appropriate item in Section 2.2 Detailed SDW Operation. 2.1. SDW Quick Start. Step 1. Go to the User Download site: http://pulsedata.propagation.net/SDW/User/login.aspx Step 2. There you will find 2 fields to complete. The first is the Serial Number of your BrailleNote, and the second is the Password. Step 3. Enter the first 5 digits of your Serial Number; that is the number displayed before the first dash. Step 4. Use the Password 'frog1' without the quote marks. Step 5. Execute the 'Logon' button, and you will be taken to the 'KeySoft SMA Options' page, providing that your Serial Number/Password combination is registered. Step 6. There you should find that you have KeySoft 5.0 and KeySoft 5.1 Build 19 available for download. Step 7. Check the radio button associated with KeySoft 5.1 Build 19. Step 8. On the same page, located below the "Download" button, you will notice that there are 3 'Additional Components for the selected Release'. These are the 'KeySync PC (1.1) set-up program, and 'Release Notes Part 1' and 'Release Notes Part 2'. Step 9. Execute the 'Download' button to start the download sequence. You will then be taken to a third page, which has a further link labelled 'Click here to Download Package'. Step 10. Execute the 'Click here to Download Package' link. Step 11. Save the download package to an appropriate folder on your PC, or in the 'Downloads' folder of your BrailleNote if you are using this to download the package. Step 12. The download package will have the file name of the form 'KeySoft 5.1 Build 19 (nnnnn).exe', where (nnnnn) should match the Serial Number of your machine. For example, if your machine serial number was 15734, the download package will be 'KeySoft 5.1 Build 19 (15734)'. Step 13. If you wish to download the 'KeySync PC (1)' set-up program, execute the link labelled 'KeySync PC (1)'. Step 14. Close the Web Browser session to exit the SDW site, and proceed to Section 3. Installation of KeySoft 5.1. 2.2. SDW Detailed Operation. Section 2.2 describes in more detail the operation of the SDW User site. 2.2.1. Overview. Open your Web Browser and type in the address: http://pulsedata.propagation.net/SDW/User/login.aspx The login page contains 2 fields labelled 'Serial Number' and 'Password'. There is also a 'Logon' button, and a link named 'Forgotten Password'. A common password 'frog1' has been allocated to all Users. The presence of the Password field will become more important in the future when we extend the SDW site to allow User's to check their personal name and address details. At that point you will also be able to change your password. The use of a common password does not affect the security of the system, because the generation and download of packages for a particular Serial Number does not remove your software from the system. It should be remembered that the downloaded package will only run on a machine with matching Product Signature, so it is pointless for people to "surf" and download packages for Serial Numbers other than that of their own BrailleNote. 2.2.2. Logging On. First enter the Serial Number of your BrailleNote. Only enter the first 5 digits displayed before the first dash. The Serial Number of your unit may be determined from the Main Menu, by pressing SPACE with I for units with Braille keyboards, and READ with I for units having computer style keyboards. Press the SPACE bar repeatedly until the serial number information is displayed. The number that you are looking for is just the 5-digit number prior to the first dash. For example, if the displayed serial number was "Serial Number 13287-13287-800-US", the number you would enter is '13287' without the quotation marks. Enter the Password 'frog1' without the quotes, and proceed to the 'Logon' button. Execute the 'Logon' button, and providing your Serial Number and Password are registered on the SDW site, you will be taken to the 'KeySoft SMA Options Page'. If you are downloading using a BrailleNote with a Braille keyboard you will need to enter the Serial Number and Password using computer braille. 2.2.3. Invalid Serial Number or Password. If you get the message 'Invalid serial number or password, please try again, or email [EMAIL PROTECTED]', we suggest that you first check that you have entered the correct Serial Number and used the Password 'frog1'. If you are confident that you have entered the Serial Number and Password correctly, and you are still receiving the 'Invalid ' error message, it means that your Serial number is not registered on the SDW site. If you think that it should be, because you are eligible to receive the KeySoft 5.1 release, then send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Include your name and address details in the email, the Serial Number and type of your machine, and any other pertinent details that will assist us to investigate the matter. 2.2.4. Forgotten Password? This feature sends the password to the email address stored in the Registered Owners registration record. If no email address is held, a page error may occur, or if you get the message that an email has been sent, and you don't receive it, the request has been sent to the SDW administrator. 2.2.5. Updating your registration details. If you would like to update your registration details, simply send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED], and include the following details; BrailleNote Serial Number: BrailleNote Type: First Name: Last Name: Address line 1: Address line 2: City: State or County: Post Code: Country: Phone Number: Email Address: Desired Password: We will confirm by email that your records have been updated. 2.2.6. KeySoft SMA Options Page. Following a successful logon as detailed in Section 2.2.2 you will be taken to the 'KeySoft SMA Options' page. 2.2.6.1. SMA Status. The first item on the page is 'SMA Status'. This will currently show '0 SMA Updates Remain', even if you have purchased an SMA. Don't be concerned by this, as this display will be updated to reflect your true SMA status at a later date. 2.2.6.2. Downloads Available. The second item on the page is labelled 'Downloads Available' and shows the BrailleNote software you are eligible to download. This will typically show 2 items, 'KeySoft 5.0' and 'KeySoft 5.1 Build 19'. You need to check the radio button associated with the package you wish to download. 2.2.6.3. Additional Components. At the bottom of the 'KeySoft SMA Options' page you will find another label 'Additional Components for Selected Release'. To the right of this label appears any additional software component that is associated with the software selected in the 'Downloads Available' area. For example, if 'KeySoft 5.1' is the available download, then 3 additional items; 'KeySync PC(1)', 'Release Notes Part 1' and 'Release Notes Part 2' will appear as additional components. The 'KeySync PC' download is the set-up program for installing the KeySync version 1.1 software onto your PC. The set-up program installs the KeySync Application on your PC, and checks that the necessary supporting Microsoft dot.NET components are present. Please note that KeySync (1.1) will work with Microsoft Outlook 2000 and XP, running on Windows 2000 or XP. It is not backwardly compatible to earlier versions such as 98. The 'Release Notes' items allow access to a copy of the Release Notes. Part 1 is the Overview document, and Part 2 is this document. 2.2.7. Downloading Files. To download your authorised installation package, simply check the 'KeySoft 5.1 Build 19' radio button, and the press the Download button to start the download sequence. You will then be taken to another page containing a further link labelled 'Click here to Download Package'. The screens that follow will be dependent on individual PC settings, but in summary, choose the option to download the file to disk, and save the file to a suitably named folder. If you intend to install the 'KeySync PC (1.1)' application, go back to the 'KeySoft SMA Options' page and execute the link 'KeySync PC (1.1)'. If you already have KeySync 1 on your PC you need to install 'KeySync PC (1.1) before you can take advantage of the synchronisation of KeyPlan with Outlook's calendar. We recommend that you install "KeySync PC (1.1) "over-the-top" of "KeySync PC (1.0) without uninstalling the latter. 3. Installation of KeySoft 5.1. The installation process is divided into 2 separate phases, the first installs the KeySoft 5.1 upgrade, and the second installs the KeySync PC(1.1) component. It should be emphasized that if you don't intend to use the Microsoft Outlook Contacts and Calendar synchronization feature, you do not have to download and install the 'KeySync PC (1.1)' component. Instructions are provided for installing the package from a plug-in memory card, directly from the BrailleNote Downloads folder, and for using the ActiveSync Installer. 3.1. Installation Process The installation of KeySoft 5.1 involves the copying of new files onto the Flash Disk. Once this copying has been completed you are asked to reset the BrailleNote and this installs some of the files into the appropriate locations on the KeySoft System Disk. The KeySoft 5.1 installation requires the establishment of the database framework required to support the new Planner, and this process may extend the reset time beyond what you are normally used to. Please be patient, and wait for the system to complete these installation set-up processes. If during the installation process you are advised that the current file is newer than that being installed by the KeySoft 5.1 installation package, press ENTER to accept the file being offered by the installation package. 3.2. Importing "old" Planner Files. Before embarking on the installation of KeySoft 5.1 you should give some thought as to how many of your "old" Planner files you wish to import into the new Planner system. For example, if you have been using the BrailleNote since 2001 to diligently record your life's activities, you will have 4 "old" Planner files that could potentially be imported in the new Planner database. When KeySoft 5.1 installation is complete and KeySoft 5.1 runs for the first time, it checks for the presence of any "old" Planner year files in the KeyPlan folder, and asks if you wish to import them on a file-by-file basis. Unless you are one of those people that have trouble letting go of the past, we would recommend that you limit your importation to say 2003 and 2004. This is especially so, if you normally have numerous appointments during the year. When first run, KeySoft 5.1 will prompt for the import of each year Planner into the new Planner system. If you answer yes to the prompt, the "old" year Planner will be imported into the Planner database, and the "old" Planner file will then be moved to the "Old Planner Files" folder located in the KeyPlan folder on the Flash Disk. If you answer no, the "old" file will be moved to the "Old Planner Files" folder without being imported into the new Planer database. Section 1.5 of these Release Notes details how you can later import an "old" Planner file that wasn't imported during the first run of KeySoft 5.1. 3.3. Reset Procedures. During installation of KeySoft 5.1, you will be instructed in the documentation, or by your BrailleNote, to perform various types of resets. For example, the BrailleNote may instruct: "System Files have been updated. Press Reset". It is important to follow the requested reset instructions, of which there are three possibilities, and these are detailed below. 3.3.1. Press Reset. This means: Press the Reset switch, located in the recess behind the On/Off Switch. No keyboard keys should be held down while the Reset switch is being pressed. You should hear a beep immediately after pressing the Reset switch, followed by a short chime some 10 to 30 seconds later. After the chime, you should hear the KeySoft sign on message, indicating the software version. Pressing the Reset switch without any keys held down restarts the BrailleNote and if present, loads the KeySoft upgrade installed on the Flash Disk. 3.3.2 Press Reset with dots 1-2-3 (f-d-s). For units with Braille keyboards, this means: Hold down the keys representing dots 1, 2 and 3, and while continuing to hold them down, press the Reset switch. Don't release the keys until the speech restarts. For units with computer style keyboards, this means: Hold down the f, d and s keys, and while continuing to hold them down, press the Reset switch. Don't release the keys until the speech restarts. You should hear a beep immediately after pressing the Reset switch, followed by a short chime some 5 to 20 seconds later. After the chime, you should hear the KeySoft sign on message, indicating the software version. Reset with dots 1-2-3 (f-d-s) forces the BrailleNote to load the version of KeySoft burnt into the ROM. 3.3.3 Press Reset with dots 4-5-6 (j-k-l). For units with Braille keyboards, this means: Hold down the keys representing dots 4, 5 and 6, and while continuing to hold them down, press the Reset switch. Don't release the keys until the speech restarts. For units with computer style keyboards, this means: Hold down the j, k and l keys, and while continuing to hold them down, press the Reset switch. Don't release the keys until the speech restarts. You should hear a beep immediately after pressing the Reset switch, followed by a short chime some 15 to 40 seconds later. After the chime, you should hear the KeySoft sign on message, indicating the software version. Reset with dots 4-5-6 (j-k-l) clears the RAM portion of the KeySoft System Disk and if present, copies any KeySoft component that needs to be installed in the KeySoft System Disk. This reset allows new system files to be installed into the KeySoft System Disk. The Date and Time will require resetting following a Reset with dots 4-5-6 (j-k-l). 3.4. Required Files. Download your 'KeySoft 5.1 Build 19 (nnnnn).exe' installation package from the SDW site as described in Section 2 above. If you used your BrailleNote to download the install package we suggest that you leave the file in the Downloads folder. If you intend to install the upgrade using ActiveSync you will also need to have the "ActiveSync Install_new.exe" application to run on your PC. If haven't previously downloaded this, you may obtain this application from: http://www.braillenote.com/products/blindness/braillenote_downloads.asp Go to the link labeled "ActiveSync Installer for KeySoft 4.0x". This will download the file "ActiveSync Install_new.exe". Don't use an earlier version of "ActiveSync Install.exe" as changes have been made to facilitate installation of User Guide files. 3.5. Installing from Memory Card or Super Disk Drive Note, people wishing to install the upgrade using the SuperDisk drive should follow the instructions given for installing from a memory card, placing the required files on a super disk rather than on a memory card. 3.5.1. Copy the file 'KeySoft 5.1 Build 19 (nnnnn).exe" to the root directory of the memory card. 3.5.2. Insert memory card in PCMCIA or Compact Flash slot as appropriate. 3.5.3. With speech On, Reset with dots 1-2-3 (f-d-s). If you require clarification of the reset procedure, please refer to Section 3.3.2. 3.5.4. Go to Utilities Menu, press a. 3.5.5. Select the drive appropriate to where your memory card is located, by pressing 's' for storage card, or 'c' for compact flash. 3.5.6. Press Enter to select the "slash" directory. 3.5.7. Press Space until you hear "KeySoft 5.1 Build 19 (nnnnn)" then press Enter. 3.5.8. Press Enter at the prompt for a Command Line. 3.5.9. Follow the prompted installation instructions and at the conclusion press Reset when instructed. The exact sequence that follows will depend on the ROM image in your machine, and if you already have a KeySoft upgrade installed on the Flash Disk. Don't be perturbed if the sequence or timing doesn't follow exactly that outlined below. It is important that you take note of the installation prompts and act on them accordingly. 3.5.10. If you receive the message; "System files need updating. Press Reset with dots 4-5-6", perform the reset as instructed. For computer style keyboards, hold down the j-k-l keys. If you require clarification of the reset procedure, please refer to Section 3.3.3. 3.5.11. Press Reset again prior to answering any prompts as regards braille language etc. 3.5.12. Set the Time and Date. 3.5.13. At the prompt, "System Files have been updated. Press Reset." Perform the reset as requested. 3.5.14. KeySoft 5.1 build 19 should now be installed and running. 3.5.15. Import any required "old" Planner files into the new Planner system. Refer to Section 3.2 for further help. 3.6. Installing from BrailleNote Download. The following instructions assume that you downloaded the 'KeySoft 5.1 Build 19 (nnnnn).exe' package to the Downloads folder on BrailleNote Flash Disk. As an alternative to following these instructions, simply move the 'KeySoft 5.1 Build 19 (nnnnn).exe" file from the Downloads folder into the root directory of a Compact Flash card and install the upgrade as described in Section 3.3. 3.6.1. With speech On, Reset with dots 1-2-3 (f-d-s). If you require clarification of the reset procedure, please refer to Section 3.3.2. 3.6.2. Go to Utilities Menu, press a. 3.6.3. Select the Flash Disk as the drive. 3.6.4. Press Space to display the sub-directories of the Flash Disk. Press Enter when the 'Downloads' folder is displayed. Press Enter again to confirm your selection. 3.6.5. Press Space until you hear "KeySoft 5.1 Build 19 (nnnnn)" then press Enter. 3.6.6. Press Enter at the prompt for a Command Line. 3.6.7. Follow the prompted installation instructions and at the conclusion press Reset when instructed. The KeySync set-up program is around 600K in size, and when installed on your PC, it will install the KeySync version 1.1 program to the PC, and determine whether your PC has the necessary Microsoft system components installed. If these components are not present, you are offered the choice to go on-line and have the components downloaded and installed. The Microsoft dot.NET system components are of significant size, up to 27MB depending on what components are required. If you don't have access to a high-speed Internet connection you should consider requesting a copy of the 'BrailleNote Family PC Software V5.1' CD from your closest Pulse Data International sales office. A charge will apply for the supply and mailing of this CD. Installation of the KeySync program on your PC is relatively seamless, and you should just follow the installation prompts. If this is the first time you have installed KeySync, you will notice that the start-up sequence of your PC will now request a logon. 3.9. Checking the Electronic User Guide. When you have installed the package and have "KeySoft 5.1 Build 19" running, you should check that the correct User Guide files are being presented. If they aren't, it probably means that you may need to remove some earlier manual files from the Manual folder on the Flash Disk. People may well have differing files in the Flash Disk Manual folder depending on previous upgrades and the version of your base machine. However, in summary you only need the following files depending on your machine type and base language configuration. For US BrailleNote BT: The files 'bnb.exe' and 'us_bnb.exe' are all that are needed. For those outside the US, with BrailleNote BT's: The files are 'bnb.exe' and 'uk_bnb.exe'. For BrailleNote QT's both US and non-US: The file is bnq.exe. For VoiceNote QT's both US or non-US: The file is vnq.exe. For US VoiceNote BT: The files 'vnb.exe' and 'us_vnb.exe' are all that are needed. For those outside the US, with VoiceNote BT's: The files are 'vnb.exe' and 'uk_vnb.exe'. You will have to select the option to display all files when you are viewing files in the Flash Disk\Manual folder. If your machine has heaps of files in the folder, we suggest that you go to file erase, use the wild card option to select all files, then confirm each deletion, leaving the appropriate file behind. After you completed this, perform a standard Reset with no keys held down. When you are up and running again, go to the User Guide via the Options Menu, press I for Index, then V. You should find that the Version is 5.1 and is matched to your machine type. For example, if it were a BrailleNote BT, it would display: "Version 5.1 D1.0 BrailleNote BT". If find that your manual type does not match you machine type, please email [EMAIL PROTECTED], providing the Serial Number of your machine and its type. For example, is your machine a BrailleNote BT18, BrailleNote QT32, VoiceNote QT, etc. Check the Serial Number to determine the language suffix on the end of the Serial Number information. In general, machines in the US will all have a 'US' suffix, whereas machines outside the US usually have the 'UK' suffix. This suffix, together with your machine type is used to determine which User Guide is incorporated in your installation package. We will then check your product registration records against the information you provide. 3.10. Other. 3.10.1. Can't Start the Planner. If you encounter the message "Can't Start the Planner", just press Reset as suggested in the accompanying BrailleNote alert message. The normal cause of this is that you have performed a Reset with 4-5-6 (Reset with j-k-l), or the battery has gone completely flat. Under these circumstances the database engine needs to be reinstalled into the KeySoft system Disk, and pressing Reset does this. The alert message also advises that if that doesn't work you will need to re-install KeySoft 5.1. It should be emphasised that the Reset would normally fix the problem, but if you do need to re-install KeySoft 5.1, your Planner database remain intact. 3.10.2. Lost Spelling Dictionary. If your BrailleNote has a 3.07 or 4.01 ROM it is possible to loose the Spelling Dictionary when running either KeySoft 5.0 or 5.1 from the Flash Disk. You will know that this has happened if when you try to spell check a document it reports that there is no spelling dictionary installed. The loss of the Spelling Dictionary may occur if the battery goes totally flat or if you perform a 4-5-6 Reset. There is a fix for this problem, so if you encounter this issue please contact your local support representative or email [EMAIL PROTECTED], and we will forward instructions on how to restore the Spelling Dictionary and prevent the problem reoccurring. 3.10.3. Speech turns of on Braille Machines. People using machines with Braille keyboards, with speech turned on, may encounter the situation where the speech mysteriously turns itself off, but the machine is otherwise functioning normally. Just prior to the release of KeySoft 5.1 we discovered that this occurs if the machine has been in hibernation mode, and to "wake" it up you press dot 3 on its own or in combination with other keys. The simple fix if this occurs, is to toggle the speech back on either using the Thumb key shortcut, or via the Review Voice option in the Options Menu. End of Release Notes.
