Hi lindsay, The crackly speech has to do with two files running symo taneously. I amy need to check old messages to ive you which one to delete. I remember doing this in that upgrade and it fixed the speech problem. Perhaps someone can come up with it more quickly than myself.
When you are reading with speech, your BN occasionally goes into a "sleep mode". Tab the two thumb keys the extreme left and right keys and it should come out of it. This mode is to preserve the battery. Jim Aldrich
