Dear Sarah, If you use control g before pressing q, the q should work because you are changing the keyboard type.
Another thought I have is this: perhaps your BN is in one-handed mode. This would cause the braille style keyboard to appear. I haven't found out how to get out of one-handed mode. Another thing: you could try using the braille style keyboard for example if q doesn't work after you have pressed control g, press a braille q and see what happens.
