Hi Jim, if you have the original battery, then yes it sounds plausible that after three years of charging and discharging, your battery may need to be put out to pasture. The answer to your question about when to send the unit in really depends on how often you use the unit on battery, because it's clearly not in a very useable state away from he electricity right now. If it were me, I'd get the battery replaced now and get KeySoft 6.1 sent to you in the mail. Upgrading to 6.1 is going to be an easy, if somewhat lengthy process, so you'd have your unit in tiptop shape when the CF card arrives in the mail.
