Just to let those who responded to my initial post know: I tried 256 and
512 MB cards, from two different manufacturers, and in both regular and
faster format while at the store.
No luck. BN still says "card not recognized", so off it goes for service.
The good thing is I'm off from college for the summer, so it's the best
time to get things serviced/upgraded.

P.S. OH, I would have tried a PCMCIA adapter as well but shops in my area
are either out of stock or don't get them in any more. Anyway, that's the
outcome.
